Windscreen Washer Pump C5 MK II with Headlamp Washers

Post by nonnus »

Hello... I'm taking this post to present my problem.
My C5 HDi 2.0 Mk II suddenly stop sending water to the front wipers (windshield). 1st I thought it was missing the water washing fluid, but then I refilled the water deposit and the problem persists. I had the idea to turn on the headlights (My C5 has the front headlight washers) and turn on the wipers and I really hear the pump and the water coming from the hoses to the headlight but no water to the windshield.
I disconnected the hose from the bonnet sprayers to the windshield to see if they were obstructed with dirt or other motives, but they seemed fine, and no water coming from the disconnected hose. So, or is the hose connected to the pump that has some issue, or the pump itself?!?!
Does this model with headlight washers have independent Pumps (Windshield & headlight = 2 pumps)??? I don't remember if is it possible to get access to the water deposit from below the bumper, or if the front bumper must be removed to get access to the water deposit...
Any help, please?

Mine doesn't have the headlamp washers but is otherwise the same.

You can get at the pump by removing the front half of the under wing plastic shielding, it a bit of a stretch and is down near the power steering pump.

When mine failed it was the rubber pipe from the pump to the screen rotted away up over the top of the wing shield and the water was just going onto the road.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

I've moved this post into a separate topic as it's a different system to the MK I to avoid confusion.

To answer your question, there are 3 types of pumps available, but only one pump is fitted for the front / rear: A pump for front screen only, or a pump for screen and rear washer (where fitted) and a separate pump for models with Headlamp washers.

Access is from the front right side (passenger side on a Left Hand Drive) as Gibbo mentions - wheel off and remove the wheel arch lining. But these models have a larger reservoir that the other models so space is tight, along with the washer rams and tubing, but you should be able to get to the pump this way if you suspect it. At the same time you can test the washers at this time to see if it is running water elsewhere, which would probably eliminate the pump.

Ok... thank you very much.
I went to service Citroen to find out about the system diagram and I saw 2 links... one for "front window-washer" and the other for "headlight washer-reservoir-pump", and the diagrams are different, that's what make me a bit confused.
If I understand what you say, (my c5 does not have rear window washers\wipers) is that there is only one pump that is connected to the front window washers and headlight washers. If so, I hear the pump buzzing when I start the window washing alone and also with headlights on (with headlight on, the water comes to the headlights and not to the windscreen), maybe the problem is somewhere in the hoses to the windscreen.
When I have time I will investigate this problem. ;)

Ok, it's a bit confusing so I've updated my post.

Here is a picture of the reservoir:

The headlamp washer pump is shown in yellow and the windscreen pump is shown in green. So you probably have a faulty windscreen pump. The service diagrams are confusing as they show only each pump separately and not combined. The larger pump in yellow for the headlamp washers is larger as it needs to supply the washer jet accumulator rams with much higher pressure.

So I would focus on the windscreen washer pump in the middle - which has probably failed.

Hello... thank you for the reply... it turns out I find out the problem. It was the tube... I mean, a great section of the tube missing (broken) I had to take the bumper out to reach the problem... Thankfully nothing is wrong with the motors, they work just fine. Just bought some water tubing in local hydraulics shop and I connected the new tube to the old tube with a connector (the tube connection I bought in Citroen's local dealer... oddly they no longer sell the tube). I could replace the whole system but I checked that it might be to much work so I just replace the missing part. Now all is working well.
