XUD9 Engine Swap Any thoughts...

After having to get towed couple of times because of carburetor issues, lack of power fuel consumption of 15 l/100km and oil consumption issues i've decided to do an engine swap to what i know best, the old school peugeot diesel. The vehicle is Lada Niva 1600, made in 1982, i've done lot of work on it and changing the drivetrain will complete this project. I have couple of engines to choose from and i'll like some advice what parts to use from which engines. I have one constraint, to get it certified with the diesel engine, i must use a normally aspirated engine, but the end gol is to have a turbo diesel making a bit more then standard power. This means i need to get the supporting mods in advance and turbocharging the engine after inspection or having a second engine ready to go in, any thoughts??

The XUD was used in the factory built diesel Niva. We didn’t get them in the UK. Search on eBay Europe and you might be able to find all the bits you need.

To add to this, in your situation I'd swap in a standard NA diesel like the factory item & have a good TD ready to drop in when it's inspected. My reasoning being that the non-turbo engine is a little different internally, higher compression and no oil squirters to cool the pistons for a start, so not an ideal candidate for adding a turbo afterwards & from experience of running a TD engine with no turbo, it's lethargic and smoky even with the pump backed off.

One thing you could do as well, is when you removed the NA engine to fit the TD, I believe you can swap the camshaft from the NA engine and have a bit more performance from the TD that way, otherwise tuning is pretty easy just turning up the boost (would suggest around 20psi on a stock block/head bolts), a good front-mounted intercooler and working the pump to suit.

The NA XUD9 is no slouch, and delivered 44mpg average in our BX.
Worth giving it a go, before laying in another engine.

I do own a 405 with xud9 they are very slow, the TD and N/A are night and day difference, one part that will need significant modifications is the oil pan, the Niva has a front diff right undernight the engine, i'm thinking modifying a steel oil pan will be easier and better when off roading, my question is what to do about the baffling inside the pan, the factory engine has problems with this, on hard left hand corners the oil pressure drops to 0.
