C4 VTR power steering issue

Post by AF1 »

Hi I’m after some help with an issue I’m having on my 2006 C4 VTR.
The car would intermittently lose power steering which gradually got worse, you could normally reset it by switching the car off and back on.
I fitted a refurbished pump and all appeared well for approx a week. My wife went to start the car and power assistance had gone. At first I thought possibly the new pump had failed so plugged the old one in expecting it to whirl away but it appears that perhaps there is another issue.
I have checked the fuses under dash and bonnet. Tested supply voltage to pump ok and load tested supply wiring.
Fed up I took it to a local Citroen specialist who said they were unable to repair the fault as there was no communication with the new pump. They say it needs to go to Citroen and have a brand new pump fitted. I’m not sure if they have investigated the lack of communication with the ECU or this is a known fault ( the guy at the specialist said he had sent three away that week with the same issue).
Could anyone help as I’m tearing what little hair I have left out!
Worth noting the new pump was not programmed when fitted ( I assumed as it worked with no warning lights for approx a week all was well and didn’t require programming) and throughout the whole thing there’s been no warning lights or faults displayed and the car otherwise works fine.

Will need a wiring diagram to confirm all power supplies & earths are presented if dealing with a no comms situation.
What engine do you have, does it have ESP & what is your RP number?
RP number can be found at the bottom of the tyre pressure label.

Hi thanks for the reply.

I thought that about the wiring, I’ve not had a lot to do with Citroen’s but I thought even of it was the incorrect part it would still communicate? I even supplied the original pump to the specialist to try and plug in to see if comms were restored but I don’t think they investigated the no comms issue very thoroughly!

The engine is a 2 litre petrol and the car has ESP.
The numbers off the door are:

1033388
016
KPU

Thanks.

Doesn't look to much to it.
Battery live & earth on the 2 pin black & ignition live on pin 1 of the 5 way black. The other 2 wires are CAN lines.

A little update. Checked the wiring at the power steering pump. Pin 1 is a blue wire, checked and no ignition fees down this wire. I do however have an ignition feed down pin 5 which is a red wire which does not seem to correspond to the diagram.

That's not the correct diagram for your C4.

Pop your VIN up AF1 and I'll get the right one up, Wheeler has used the later C4 not the earlier model.

My bad, i should have noticed it was a newer style diagram. This one should be correct & ties up with what you are getting.
