Xantia MK II - Worn upper bearing of the steering column

Post by lancia58 »

The upper bearing of the steering column in my MK II Xantia is worn , causing the steering wheel to rattle. What is the replacement bearing ? Is there any thread describing how to replace the bearing ? As long as I remember I once saw a website that describes the procedure and what is the replacement bearing. It was an after market bearing ( I think SKF ) - Citroen do not specifies the part number nor the procedure. I searched over the web and could not find it.

Thanks

The factory recommendation is that if any wear is found the column should be replaced completely.

I'd guess that a good mechanic would find a fix without that expense but it needs a close look to see what's involved

Some columns have a bronze bush others a felt bush both of which can be replaced by a competent fitter.

Is the steering wheel bolt tight? I've seen rattles caused by it not being properly tightened.

Hi

The steering wheel bolt is tight. I have seen in the past a web page that refers to the problem. It is the top bearing . I can not find this page again. It described how to replace the bearing and the replacement bearing from SKF. Some fixed by tapping the bearing after removing the steering wheel

Thanks

It is tight enough for Hex Socket 21 mm, but not that tight. Maybe a helper, holding the wheel, will be needed, and also a long pipe as a lever for the socket arm.
I've red that many people had hit themselves with the wheel, when trying to pull it out... I also hit myself the first time :-D...the secret is to left the nut screwed at the end ;)
Only himself the stupid makes wrong, many are being confused by the clever :P
