Bosch VE pump issues...

Post by ekjdm14 »

So, after the first start of our project XUD9TE engine was a smokey misfiring high idling mess, I've checked the injectors to the best of my ability (spray pattern looks OK and no dribbling or excessive leak off, don't have a pop tester as yet) and swapped to a spare VE pump that we had sat in the garage for a couple of years and tried again, the result being the same, high idle, missing/smoking and no throttle control albeit it now ran for more than a couple of seconds at a time & could be switched off on the solenoid or stop lever.

Have now stripped the top off the pump as the only thing to my mind is the governor assembly must be somehow stuck on both pumps. Well, on opening one up it's full of nasty dark waxy deposits in all the nooks, crannies and pivot points so guess that's the problem then! I think this is due to having sat with veg oil in the pump over time although what came out of the original looked/felt like red diesel to me so not sure why that one gummed up, if it has.

Anyone else experienced similar issues with a VE pump that's sat without it's fuel supply hooked up for years? Glad I was ready with a CO2 extinguisher since depending where the governor had jammed it has potential for runaway, perhaps something to be extra cautious of when resurrecting long-sat diesel projects, have a means of starving the engine for air handy before you even try and crank it up.

Main thing I'd like to question here, is could the gummy internals account for the smoke also, in the form of way out-of-whack injector timing? I've left the pump body full of 2 stroke petrol mix tonight, to help free it up & the "lid" is in the dining room getting cleaned out. Attached is a short video of how it behaves (ignore the dancing engine, it's not properly mounted yet)

Can't be much else other than governor right? and the smoke looks/smells like timing out

Oh, and thank you to Evilally, you can just see the inlet manifold in the video haha, that and injectors for Black arrived this morning cheers :) Just wish YT wouldn't take it upon themselves to turn the damned video sideways when I filmed it correct way round!

If you leave veg oil in a VE pump it can gum up the internals quite nicely ! Normal diesel can have the same effect after a while. The plunger that controls the timing can gum up and stick which causes all kinds of running issues. Also the coating on the plunger (teflon I think) can wear thin and stick which causes the same issues.

A Bosch diesel specialist will quote for a complete pump strip-down, rebuild and recalibration.
Am about to have that done on ours here, to deal with an internal pressure leak (output-end large O-ring).

Accurate pump timing is essential on those engines, you need to do it with a dial gauge for the best results, quite minor mis-timing can make them smoke like that.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Citrojim has a excellent guide on stripe down and rebuild of the Bosch pump.

I'm sure it's in one of the forum sections.

I used it to sort out my pump on the 1.9 Td estate I had 10 years ago.

I have a long thread in the citroen section from 2010 about this subject.

Thanks all for the replies, the original pump/engine look to have sat ex-car for quite some years judging by the filth that was over it (backed up by seller saying it'd been lying round ages).

Typical it's raining now so can't really do much to check/reassemble the pump but the plunger did seem to be stuck last night, hopefully the 2T mix has freed it enough to work. I'll chuck the top back together when I can and see how it behaves, if no joy then will strip one down and do it properly. Will have a read through the linked threads, it's raining so may as well refresh the memory banks ;)

Cheers, Dan

EDIT-: certainly gummed up issues, after cleaning/freeing the governor arms and (to a lesser extent) the timing control, engine has now been able to be started/idled for long enough to ascertain that the basis is indeed a gooden, and the turbo seems fine. Next on the list is to do it properly, pump is off but now have to assemble a new bed and move the old one to the back bedroom so no playtime till that's done

Good to have peace of mind though, build can progress a bit now.

Thanks again
