Xsara 2litre HDI crankshaft Pulley

Post by oscar »

Hi have what believe is crankshaft pulley failing starting little noise now clack clacking away like an old diesel!
Did notice while back it looks bit up n down wonky! Did think about other bits like idler,Alternator,Aircon but rev sound isn't quite right as they revolve at different speeds?

Garage/Tyre gaff went to other day to balance wheels said Pulley and Mechanic mate that works on PSA Vehicles said yep when said noise and don't go too far as can take cam belt out!

Now looked at so many pulleys could see them in me sleep!. found ones for Pug 206 diesel £20 yet wanted £36 of xsara but when looked through a list fits either can more!
Are they all the same if162mm extrernal 6 rib?

He's correct that if the pulley completely fails it can take out the timing belt but "don't go too far" is bad advice as it can totally fail without any warning whether you drive half a mile or 500 miles. I would stop using it straight away until it has been replaced.

Better to get a quality one . Dayco, Corteco, Gates etc. Can understand you wanting to cross reference one from Ebay etc but some of them are just cheapos.

Yes, one belt rib hanging over each side of pulley. Febi is decent. Last Febi thing I bought for C5, had Dayco stamped on it, so all good stuff.

Time for the impact wrench ?
Different car but 4 years ago my pug had same issue , common fault , paid £25 eBay took a morning todo did the cam belt and water pump as well when you see what these are made of your see why they fail , sold my pug 2/3 years later still running much better but knew the same issue would return in another few years plus I needed a bigger car, good luck with yours , make sure you undo the bolt the correct way, and don't chance the quick turn the engine over trick with long bar wedged on ground.....

Reading the "BOL" There are two types? Early and late! Early less NM's and DEG.Late which has "Green mark" more NM's & Deg but say's need to lock crank and cam as Cam belt cog is moveable!?

Yet no one/where else mentions that! is that more BS from BOL?

Found a deal on a decent Impact wrench that takes my batteries if needed? Mind i guess if using Rattler won't need to lock drive up as best can where as if using long bar will need to pin through disc/in high gear etc?
My impact driver (hex head goes upto around 120nm's?

You are best to put the pin through the flywheel. On a c5 you can get to it from front of car. I made a pin and welded it to a long rod, so I could slip it in. For belt and braces I made a toothed cog to lock the ring gear as well. Do that and nothing will move no matter what force you put on it. I had 5ft scaffy pole and me on end of it.

took most of it apart after jacking it up on my old Japan made Yankee 2ton trolley jack.Makita DTW285 impact Wrench made short work of bolt! Lined new one up zapped it on soft setting then torqued it did 50deg odd.
got belt back on started it up and........................................silence! pulley wasnt hanging to bits but loose inside was the one that has three slots that looks like has adjustable square bits.
Aircon pulley bearings not great!
Total well more or less as yanked heat shield out from front part as rattling away catching on things
