Hi really hoping somebody can help
I have a 1997 106 gti the battery light sometimes comes on faint random on and off, it’s charging fine nearly 14v
Alternator is new genuine nos
New varta battery
Cleaned connections battery starter and alternator And earth to gear box
Took it for quick spin earlier and noticed that when the light comes, if I turn the ingnition on and off the light goes out and will stay out until it randomly come on again
Am thinking maybe Ignition switch ?
Been trying to find it all day be very grateful for and help and suggestions first problem that’s baffled me in 15 years of owning it it’s been a good car
Thankyou Danny

Re: 106 gti 1997 baterry light strange problem
I don't have the circuit diagram for 106 hamdy, but wonder whether the resistor often included across the warning light (to enable charging, even if the bulb blows) might be misbehaving or has a poor connection? Charging voltage of 14-14.4v sounds ok.

Below is a diagram for a Saxo but should be very similar. It shows the route of the IND wire from the alternator, I would have a look at interconnectors IC02A & IC20A.
Especially IC02A id be pulling that apart to check for water ingress/corrosion.

I would say that the ignition switch is a possibility, but it could be any of the connectors between the battery and the live side of the warning bulb.
If you can measure the voltages at the bulb (when the fault occurs), it would help diagnosis.

Thank you for the replies
I forgot to mention the alternator voltage doesn’t change to much if anything from idle to higher rpms

Re: 106 gti 1997 baterry light strange problem
That's ok. Alternator will be outputting even at engine idle speed, and able to provide a certain amount of current for lights, accessories, battery charging, etc. The voltage will be more or less constant, but the current the alternator can produce will climb as the revs are increased.

Hi quick up date had a look after tea. cleaned the IC02 and the connector and the two earths next to them they looked mint inside.
Had it running a little while as I lent in to turn the car off I caught the wipers and it brought the battery light on. I turn the car off and on again to try and make this happen again but it didn’t
