As I remember among my fellows in the late 60s early seventies the rapier was not that popular as it was unwieldy in the hairpins, longer than ideal wheelbase and while it resulted in some dramatic cornering it simply lost time through the twistys. Its main competitor of similar type would have been the Lotus Cortinas which were much better but they themselves gave way to the shorter wheelbase escorts. So I would say no the Rapiers were never considered among the top classes of rally cars. IMHO of course :-D

Having just seen the picture I would point out that I am talking about the later fastback rapier!!

Would you believe my mate Bob's first car was an Imp Sport and so I had a fair bit of experience as a passenger in it and it was not comfortable to say the least!! Of course we didn't care at 17 and loved its road holding and the nose lift under severe acceleration, however there was restricted room for nav lights, roamers and map storage so for that reason alone we chose not to rally it!! Of course a works team gets over those issues with appropriate mods but not on your pride and joy. I'll ask him if he has a pcture of it anywhere! :-D

I'm imagining one of the rally mods may have had to be a sack of spuds or two in the front!

...and would you believe it, when looking for pictures of a Rally Imp this one appeared at Silverstone Auctions an Ex-Rosemary Smith Rally Imp no less :-D

Most navigators of the time would argue that the car came with 1 sack, conveniently placed behind the steering wheel, and the driver's thought similarly about their co-drivers. Of course both "sacks" were essential to make a winning team. I was lucky enough to have 5 navigators/co-drivers over the years and every one of them brilliant in their own way. :-D

Find the answer in the FCF..Quest 2

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 29 May 2020, 09:25 There are innumerable threads on the FCF which contain lots of interesting information, and contributions from members past and present, which remain locked up in our collective archives.

I invite you to have a simple little trawl using the standard search facilities on the forum, and retrieve the answer to some simple questions.
This should maybe be Quest 1A seeing how it is linked but we will move on and call it Quest 2....

One of the Roadside AA Boxes in the FCF AA Box Challenge included an Imp AA Van in the photograph. Find the photograph and post it up here.

I had several Imps and would be hard pushed to see them as a rally car. I had a mate, former next door neighbour who fad an Imp Sport. I forget the circumstances now but we had to go to Gateshead late one night and took both cars. It was quite amusing seeing the flames coming out of his exhaust pipe. He was pushing it a bit though.

"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."

Steve's just made it 3 Mick. :-D yes and you have succeeded in Quest 2! Glad you are playing along.

I do hope to have a play myself in the fullness of time, if others put up the odd quest! Trying to make them "user Friendly and not that difficult to find at the mo.

On the subject of Imps, we have to remember Malcolm's (Citronut) contribution on the subject....I'll make it an easy find but formally I'll wrap it in Quest 3

Can you find Malcolm's tale of his blue imp he bought for £25, and reproduce it in your answer and post it up here for us all to enjoy again.

Malcolm, who did like a double entendre, would definitely, have picked up on this, all I can say is...

Playing with yourself can be satisfying but its always better with a few others :-D

I just got a 5 minute break while she answers the door which was just long enough to dig up Malcolm's story: :-D
Spoiler: show
many many moons ago i purchased a blue Hillman imp for £25 quid taxed and tested,
we lived in Hythe at the time,
my sexy sister in law and her familly came over on the bus from Dover one day,
we attempted to drop them home after there visit,
we pointed the Imp up Dover hill fully laden with sis in law her two kids and hubby, and her in doors and of course the driver ( me ),
just about coxed the poor thing up around the first bend of the hill and she refused ( dug her heals in ( no not the sister in law ) point blank to go any further,

i managed to roll her back into a farm entrance to go back down the hill and attempt Canterbury hill as it is less steep, then head to Dover via Alkham Valley,

got up the hill and onto the Alkham road, them my sister in law stats panicking and shouting pill over!!! let us out!!!!, theres flames comming out of the back of the back of the car,

i pulled over onto the grass verge and they all bundled out and ran across the other side of the road,
my brother in law and i gingerly went over to it and opened the boot lid to see a small flame coming from a hole in the side of the crank case,

i went back a couple of days later to retrieve her remains and she was gone    #-o :-D
Regards, malcolm.
