Part identification , so I can ask the right questions

Post by belaprops »

Dear forum members,
I'm desperate in trying to get my C5 x7 VTR (2011) running smooth again. I have a tech background but not in car technology
So I was wondering if anyone can help me with the attached pics so I can use the correct name for the part.
I also am wondering if one item underneath has been removed (last pic )

When people talk about the EGR valve, is this the 2" valve inside the airdoser or is it located somewhere else.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Pic 3, is this the Eolys additive tank.Pic 4, open pipes..something was here?

Picture 1 is the Inlet Air Temperature & Pressure Sensor. These are fragile - the air is split into two channels. One goes to a very small resistor which you might be able to see at the tip, which measures the air temperature, - be very careful not to damage it. The other channel passes the air through up into a diaphragm that measures the air pressure.
Picture 2 is the EGR module from the looks of it.
Picture 3 is the Additive Tank
Picture 4 - looking into it...

Marc,

Is that hole a oxygen sensor or something in the exhaust ?

I'll check mine outside, it's familiar when I changed the DPF last year.

I was just going to do the same - back in a mo....

... forget that idea, hedge cutting and I can see sod all. But the oxygen sensor is near the front, not the rear, so can't be that.

It can't be the pressure differential sensors either as they are further up:

So this may be a mounting support maybe - Kenny may have the answer here..

Marc,

Could this be the DPF pressure pipes it's about the same position.

Couldn't see under mine properly!
00081586.jpg
Just had another look at the photo, it's to far back for the DPF pipe. It is in the same position as the support brackets for the exhaust and on mine there is a single support bracket with the threads in place for a support bracket on the other side.

I don't have an idea now what this could be.

The only other thing I can think of is, has the exhaust been changed and the wrong type fitted ?

I don't think so Kenny - if you look at my last post those pipes are before and just after the particle filter (14) in your diagram, Bela's picture shows the pipe is directly next to the additive tank.

Thanks guys,

If pic 2 of is the EGR module, then I'm glad I asked as I have been confusing this with the airdoser, people say I need to clean this EGR valve, would I dismantle the part with the Blue star on the pic. The actuator is controlled by the first solenoid on the back of the engine described as a proportional valve.

So I have a Eolys tank, how do I check if there is still enough inside.

Is there a way to check if the sensor in pic 1 is still working.

Thanks a lot again.

Don't worry about the additive tank - the system will tell you when it thinks it is getting low via a message on the dashboard display.

It is important that when you do come to top it up, that you use the correct additive - for your X7 this will be Powerflex additive only from your build date 12446 - you should have a Blue click fit connector on the additive tank. Do not use Eolys DPX42, nor Eolys 176, nor Infineum F7995.

As for the Air inlet temp and pressure sensor:
DesignationValueUnit
Supply voltage5 ± 0,25V
Pressure measured by the inlet air temperature and pressure sensorBetween 300 and 3000Mbar
Impedance between channels 3 and 4
(Connector disconnected, negative terminal of the ohmmeter on channel 4 )
15 or belowkohms
Impedance between channels 2 and 4
(Connector disconnected, negative terminal of the ohmmeter on channel 4 )
15 or belowkohms
Supply power15 maximummA

The system on this engine incorporates 2 processes: A self-checking cleaning mechanism which operates each time the ignition is switched on and an 'Antisticking' feature.

Cleaning: The system performs of one or several successive opening and closing cycles. When complete, the engine ECU commands it to try and reach the maximum opening position. If it detects a block, it repeats the cleaning cycle. If it fails a second time to reach the maximum open position, then a fault is flagged up.

Antisticking: The system attempts to detect any 'sticking' of the valve by:
  • Speed of movement of the gate of the electric EGR valve
  • Errors in regulation of the position of the electric EGR valve
If the valve is stuck or is beginning to stick, a control signal is sent that vibrates the gate of the EGR to prevent the sticking. The amplitude of the vibration is determined by the degree of sticking. This process is only in operation when the EGR is in operation.

Of course, the above strategies are to prevent the valve itself from sticking and cannot account for any clogging further down the system for example, but I thought it worth a mention as at least you would know that the valve itself is working or not from any faults logged if there was an issue with the EGR valve sticking itself.

Thanks for that,
Its says it's electric valve, but the actuator on the side is controlled by vacuum.
Are there more valves inside this module.

It's one of the parts which can make the engine run rough if I read the many post well,
