XUD9 cooling water unintentionally spilled! Cannot find coolant bleed points.

Post by CPtje »

HELP needed! I am learning more and more about my Peugeot 1.9TD XUD motor in my Fiat based campervan.

This morning I unintentionally spilled/drained about 1-2 liters of cooling liquid because I unscrewed a metal coverplate at the lower right side (standing in front) of my motor. Cooling liquid poored out and I spilled about 1-2 liters before being able to close it again.

Now for my question. After closing I just filled the large cooling liqued container again. Is this sufficient or do I need to do more? I read about bleeding points and so on. My coolant tank is way above the motor itself (see picure). Is bleeding necessary? And if yes, what is the easiest way to do this at home?

Check out this guys YouTube channel on mostly 306 diesel cars and repairs of them. He knows a thing or two and you can ask him questions.

On your cooling system pipework, I can't advise, but it is essential that all air is bled from an XUD engine, as they are prone to trapped air in the head causing localised overheating and head warping/HG leaks.

I understand that the air must be bled, but I really cannot find any bleeding points. Checked the hoses to the cooling matrix, nothing. The thermostat: No.
The coolant tank is the highest point in the system as far as I can see. But it still gives me that nagging, unsecure feeling.

Hard to see from the photo, but that 'may' be one just to the right of the green plug? It looks like a plastic hand operated one. If it is be careful, they break. Don't take any of what I've said as gospel, I don't know that configuration.

A service manual/owner's book would help
Guesswork would be: thermostat housing, radiator top, radiator top hose, hoses going through firewall to heater matrix, and any 'high points' on the system. Easy to overlook a vital one.
Having the coolant tank up high helps drive air out, but bleed screws still need to be opened.

Thanks everyone for helping and searching.

I have been looking at the places you adviced but am really puzzled. The search for bleed screws....
This morning I checked again and made some pics. Hopefully someone can help me out. Every description I might make here is looking from the front of the engine.

Picture 1: The left top of the radiator has a smaller hose that goes up to the large coolant tank. I don't find a bleed screw.

Picture 2: Might this white thing on the thermostat be a bleed screw? If Yes, how to operate without breaking it.

Picture 3: Highest positioned hoses going into the van. Nothing?

I had a look at the PSA instructions for bleeding this engine, but they are generic, not specific to the vans, and although a bleed valve is mentioned, it is not clear that there actually is one in all installations.

In the bottom photo, there is a connector with no plug, just above it is a round cap. That cap may be the bleed point, or it may just be capping off a port that is not used in this installation.

In the last picture right above the sensor that is not connected, is you bleeder screw, if that is not you can always unscrew that sensor, most importantly is you to get coolant behind the thermostat, so it can work. Peugeot thermostats have rubber seal and they are often airtight so coolant get to the thermostat to heat it up.

That plug at the top of the 'stat housing could be a bleed point, or it could be an (unused) take-off point for the expansion tank on other models.
It you can't find the bleed screws, then removing/slackening the sensor is a reasonable way forward, although really unusual.
Bleeding, after draining/refilling, need to be done with the engine heating up and getting to full working temperature (fan(s) cutting in).

If all else fails, you could try asking your local Fiat agent workshop where the bleed screws are, or try a Fiat Ducato forum, via google. We know the engine well, but not how it was plumbed into the vehicle by Fiat.
