So today after having a nice walk i started my drive home in my 2005 xsara picasso 2.0 hdi
i noticed the rear wiper was activated on the intermittant setting, despite the switch being turned off, so the wiper was wiping intermittantly however it did seem as though some wipes were frequent....yet it parked perfectly fine each time almost as if you were turning the wiper on and off using the switch if that makes sense
i initially suspected the comms unit so i turned the headlights on, and the front wipers as it started to rain....and it did not activate again for the rest of the 20 minute drive home
the wiper does not activate while unlocking/locking nor when you open a door, and it seems to work fine off the switch
what do we reckon, comms unit?
is this the first sign of the dreaded comms2000 failure?

Is the battery in good condition ?
From memory you can set the rear wiper to be auto if you have auto front wipers.
If the front wipers are not actually set to auto would the rear wiper work if that was set to active/auto ?
A little rain on the front would activate the rear wiper as it was to auto/active??

Battery is in resonable condition, cranks a little slow due to a worn starter but not had any random errors
I don't have auto wipers and the front wipers were turned off for most the time it was misbehaving (funnily enough once i turned the fronts onto intermittent it behaved)

Re: is this the first sign of the dreaded comms2000 failure?
I'm not saying this is definitely not a com2000 failure but the top 3 usual causes of failure in my experience is:-
1. indicator faults, either not working on one side or coming on when the switch is in the off position.
2. Dipped & main beam faults, coming on when not requested or not coming on at all. Often when going over bumps in the road they flicker on/off.
3. Airbag warning light, failure of the internal rotary connector, often brings the light on when turning the steering wheel.
I'd certainly want to do a bit more investigation before shelling out for a new unit as i'm sure you are aware are not cheap. Sometimes just lightly moving the switch a little bit can entice the fault to happen. If you have access to diagbox or another decent diagnostic gear you can look at live data & see if the switch is doing what its requesting. Personally if it was mines & it was only affecting the rear wiper I would just unplug the rear motor & live without it if it turned out the com2000 had failed.

The rear wiper defaults to wipe automatically when reverse gear is selected and the front wipers are in operation.admiral51 wrote: ↑26 Apr 2020, 20:37 Is the battery in good condition ?

The settings are OFF, INTERMITTENT or a timed WASH/WIPE

The front wipers we're certainly turned off, i was driving forward too
i'm interesting in seeing how it behaves today, as with french cars it could be absolutely anything!
See i've nearly finished restoring this car and want everything to work perfectly so if it is the comms2000 then i will be getting it replaced, probably cost mega money though

If it comes to that, try these people - they do new and refurbished Comms units. They should be able to help you identify the exact one you need (and be aware they really need to be the correct ones).

Re: is this the first sign of the dreaded comms2000 failure?
No problems - if it is the comms unit, they will become more troublesome when they start to fail. Ours started with the headlamps coming on and going off of their own accord during the day and the night on Auto - so we had to leave them on manual - but even so, they still played up. We had a new Citroen one fitted and end of issues. I've also had to replace one on a MK I C5.
