I can count ( :lol: ) the same amount of fins at both the 3D pic and yours -> 8 pcs. My guess is a gearbox with finns, but this is only my view.

Mornin all

Does anyone have pictures of old style and new style ML6C, Mine only has the cooling fins on the bottom and I am unsure how much oil to put in...

Steve, yours should be with fins so refer to the guide in my procedure on the previous page:
Quantity of oil to fill after draining
Gearbox casing with fins: 1.9 Litres
Gearbox casing without fins 2.6 Litres

Quantity of oil to fill after an overhaul
Gearbox casing with fins: 2.2 Litres
Gearbox casing without fins 2.9 Litres

It was just the fact it only had fins on the bottom, I have refilled with 1.9 litres of Total 75w80 GL4.
Coolant next, Expecting a delivery of Glysantin Coolant in next few days, then I will drain flush and refill.

Nobody has come up with a photograph of gearbox without fins yet. Must admit I'm curious what the difference is.

I have searched the web but can't find a pic of an earlier version.
When I drained the dirty oil out I recovered 1.55 Litres in a container and I don't think there could have been more than half a litre on my workshop floor, I had a half pipe under the drain plug but the speed it came out overwhelmed it. But glad I have changed it...
Car is still in my workshop and I am trying to figure out the best way to drain all the coolant out, flush it and ensure it is completely empty before I refill it.

But Its raining and I have nothing better to do..

It is my understanding that apart from the obvious effect of natural cooling, they are always looking for ways to make the cars lighter to meet stricter emissions and Euro standards. Fins on a gearbox can also be used to reinforce the structure - rather than making the gearbox casing thicker, so that can save some weight.

As an example, the ninth letter or digit in your VIN will tell you the type of gearbox you have and its specific Euro standard / Emission level. In the case of the C5 family there are 13 gearbox designations. There is a 6 speed manual gearbox that is Euro 3 certified and another 6 speed manual that is Euro 4 certified and another that is Euro 5 certified. Just a few examples, so making a few tweaks / design changes make a big difference to certification.

Having just done the cambelt and water pump on mine this weekend, I can tell you a surprising amount of coolant sits in the water pump once you've pulled the bottom rad hose off. There'd be no practical way of removing that water other than removing the water pump. The only other option would be heavy dilution of what's in there, but if you - like me - prefer to refill with distilled water (as per spec), then diluting with tap water will be a tiny bit counter-productive.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

I figured it wouldn't all come out of the hose, I have managed to find the Cylinder block drain and I am going to measure how much I drain out to see if I get it all,
I am not draining it until my new coolant arrives, just in case I need it .

Agree, best to avoid any tap water remaining in the system, as well as the remains of a different variety of coolant, and to do any final flushing with distilled/de-ionised water. All subsequent topping up should be done with exactly the same coolant.

I have demineralized water to mix with the Glysantin concentrate coolant I have on order, I will be flushing with an hose, ( ours contains very little contaminants ). Inside our kettle is still clean and its about 4 years old. Then I am going to blow the remains out with compressed air.
