Nemo Van Anti Theft

Post by raiderz »

The anti theft on my Citroen Nemo van keeps coming on now and again, bloody annoying, the spare key is just a normal one so can't even use that to fault find. I can go back to it later tonight and it will start fine (fingers crossed).

Seems to come on now and again, last time was August last year, when it was hot.

Why wouldnt you be able to use the spare to fault find??
It may not be a remote key but will still have a transponder chip to rule out a faulty key.

Spare key is just a plain one to open the doors. This morning went out and tried the proper key and it works again. Trouble is can't fault find because it could work for months then it may just not start, probably where I can't get it recovered or don't want to leave it.

Have you tried starting the van with the spare key? the spare plain key should start the van.
If the spare doesn't start the van it may have become un synced with the van or its been replaced with an aftermarket one with no chip or never been programmed.
Can you split the key open & see if there is a transponder chip in it ?
Image
Should look like this, not more than a centimetre long.
If you rule out the key might be worth just sticking a new transponder aerial around the ignition barrel on it, they are not unknown to start failing intermittently. They are normally quite cheap & I don't believe the need programmed on the Nemo.
As its so intermittent it could be a pain to pin point, by the time it gets recovered somewhere it will probably start again & the garage wont be able to replicate the fault.

My neighbour had one of the small Citroens with the same problem, it would start fifty times then nothing, she never did get it sorted despite many many trips to the main dealer, finally part exchanged it for a Nissan Micra.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

My info shows there was only the full electronic fob type of key for the Nemo available, so I suspect you may simply have a copy of the key blade cut for the spare that you have without a transponder chip - so that won't start the vehicle, only open the doors.

If that's the case then it may as I suggested have an aftermarket spare. Check for any branding on it, the majority of aftermarket car keys seem to be made by either Silca or JMA. Still worth seeing if it can be split open & see if a transponder chip is present, if there is it may be programable.
If I was to have a guess at it based on the way its behaving i'd say its more likely to be the aerial around the ignition barrel than the transponder chip. You can do a resistance check on the aerial, it should be 14 ohms. The problem is while it is starting ok the resistance will probably show ok.
Im not overly familiar with the Nemo anti theft system but I know its Fiat based just like the Relay van, on some models of the Relay van you can override the imobiliser if you have the access code (should be on a card supplied with the van). You input it by using the accelerator pedal & counting the flashes of the engine management light. You have to repeat this every time you start it so not ideal but at least it gets you moving. Like I say im not sure if it possible on the Nemo, the handbook should confirm.

Unlike the Relay, there's no mention of that routine applying to the Nemo - it works pretty much the same as the other types of immobilisers.

These were the only keys I got.

Thinking of swapping it for a Berlingo now, need a bit more carrying capacity really. Also the bluetooth ain't working, the mileage is flashing, the bluetooth module under the drivers seat been flattening the battery, had all sorts of problems with this one, my old 11 plate never had much done to it at all.

Looking at that keyblade id say it looks like a genuine Fiat key due to that little symbol. You wouldn’t normally see that on an aftermarket key.
Does the key turn in the ignition?

It opens the doors and turns on the ignition but that padlock comes on.

Your old van would 100% have had a built in immobiliser when it left the factory.
It could have in theory been removed , this would have required reprogramming with specialist programming equipment (it cant be done with Lexia/diagbox). The most likely reason someone would have done this would have been to use a second hand engine ECU or BSI.

I bought it at 6 months old from a nationwide dealer who had been using it for a runabout.

Then I'd say there's virtually zero chance that the immobiliser had been removed.

If this was my van & the fault was so intermittent I would just stick a new pickup aerial on it to rule it out if it wasn't too dear cant imagine its more than £30, some of the Citroen ones are only around the £20 mark. It's an easy DIY fit too.
