DS4 heating

Post by metalhead_79 »

Hi,

If I have understood correct the car should have a heating element that heats the air when engine is cold?
This can't be working properly as it takes a very long time to get any warm air from the ventilation.

Where is this element located and how can I test it?

On a side note I registered to service.citroen.com, but I only get Opel cars. Is this because I'm located in Finland, any workaround?

VIN: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

On the service.citroen issue, when you open it (having entered your ID and password), Opel is what currently appears on the screen, as PSA are at tye moment promoting their coverage of the Opel brand models.

Close the promotional box, and you can then either
- enter your VIN (and hit OK), which will bring up your car's type
- or choose Citroen/Peugeot/Opel parts/tech/etc from the drop-down list

If you have made a subscription payment, you'll be allowed into the parts of the system you've paid for, otherwise you'll get a warning that you need to pay.

Might have bodged it when I registered as rescue service as I didn't think it would affect the content. But now I seem to only get safety information about vehicles.

But you have to pay to get access to other more usable content anyway?

Payment (by the hour, day, month, year...) is now needed for access to Parts listings/diagrams (£150+tax for a year, unlimited searches), and much higher costs for Technical documentation/repair procedures.

The charge is per marque, so you have to choose which of Cit, Peu or Opel you need.

FCF has taken out a substantial subscription to the service, so if you need Parts info, do ask here. To meet the costs of this, we ask for a £10 donation, which will allow us to obtain info from the site, and post it as needed. A donation covers you for the calendar year it was made in, and the following one - so up to two years' coverage. More details here:
A response to your question will require detailed vehicle information that requires you to have made a current contribution to the Forum.

Your vehicle does have heating resistance - but it is designed to improve the rise in temperature of the passenger compartment of the vehicle and is not a substitute for the engine heating. These are composed of 3 separate resistive elements and are really designed to help with demisting until the car warms up. You would have to remove it to test it though.

On some vehicles, the electric PTC heaters only kick in when coolant temp is below a certain figure (10ºC on Toyota) and the cabin temp control is set near maximum.
The current consumed by these devices is considerable (3 x 30A on RAV4 diesel), and so use is confined to when it is really needed. Might also be dependent on available engine (alternator) revs.

The DS4 one has the following characteristics:

Nominal voltage: 14 volts.
Operating voltage: 9 - 16 volts.
Nominal power: 1000 Watts.
Operating temperature: -30 to +85 degrees Celsius.

Thanks for the help.

Is the heating resistance located at the same place as heater matrix if so where?
Would like to check that the pipes to and from the matrix are warm when engine is up to temp

Those figures will be the characteristics of the PTC heater unit itself.
The conditions for it to operate will be something else.

The three units will likely have their own fuses and relays, probably 50A each.

You should be able to check the pipes to and from the heater matrix from the engine bay where they go into the bulkhead / firewall.

As you'e in Finland, you'll have a left hand drive vehicle, so the heating resistance will be on the left hand driver's side footwell. Take the side trim off carefully and is should be accessible directly.

If you want specifics, you'll need to make a donation first as per Chris's post.

Do the pipes in the engine bay go through the firewall on the left side then as well?
Tried looking for them once, but couldn't locate.

The passenger compartment air resistors are activated in relation to the engine coolant temperature and the temperature requirement when the settings are set to "Auto Comfort" mode Chris.

Just brought that up in case one of these settings/conditions was preventing the units switching on.
I know on ours (RAV4), the engine has to really cold (below 10°C) for the heaters to operate.
Just thought it worth mentioning.

Took away the side panel on the center console so I could get access to the heater matrix.
The pipe leading to the heater matrix is piping hot and the pipe leading away is barely warm.

Is it a valve that doesn't open properly or can the matrix be clogged?

There's no valve there - but that would indicate a blockage or an air lock. Don't forget though that it is essentially a radiator, so is designed to bring in hot water and the fan blows air over it to heat the cabin, so will be cooler on the return. But if you have the car up to temperature and switch the cabin air temperature to cold, then I would expect the return pipe to be slightly cooler than the in-going pipe - but certainly not by too much.
