Alternator Intelligent/standard

Post by walbeck »

Following on from my ecomode threads, I've been checking the voltage at the battery with the engine running at tick over its around 14.7 it doesn't vary much when I rev it up suggesting a standard type alternator, out of curiosity I left it connected went out for a short drive, it was immediately noticeable how the voltage increased on the "overrun" (engine braking) to around 16 v, from what I've read this indicates an intelligent type does anyone know for sure what type would have been fitted to a 64 plate 2014 Dispatch 2 L diesel The mods have my Vin.............Mick

I've come across this site it confirms my alternator to be the intelligent type, also explains the reasons why they are being fitted

A minor form of Regenerative braking, to squeeze a whisker more mpg from the engine.

Indeed and cause a lot of pain with ecomode, as the system only allows 80% charge of the battery so the engine breaking recovered energy has somewhere to go. It also makes it very expensive to fit a leisure battery if you want to charge from the alternator more pain.....Mick

Guys - don't forget he is talking generally in that video. Stop & Start systems with regenerative braking systems fitted have a different alternator (usually reversible), and energy storage capacitors to store the power - your Dispatch has none of this - just a standard 150A Alternator - nothing fancy, but has a built in regulator.

Marc That does not explain the voltages on my first post. I've just checked the voltages on my wife's car they remain at a more or less 14.4v using the same test. Do you have the part number for the alternator on my van as fitted from the factory? The test is widely published to establish between standard/intelligent (smart) alternators..............Mick

Marc I have connections in the trade, maybe I could find the information from another source. I don't believe the alternator is at fault, just curious to get to the bottom of what alternator is fitted to my van, as I'm the second owner it could have been changed. Perhaps someone will come along with an answer to the odd voltage readings other than it being a smart alternator.............Mick
