New key case

Post by jonas-swe »

Hi,
Anyone can recommend a place where I can order a new case for my key? This spring for the key is not working so the key is always out.
And can I transfer it myself to the new case or do I need to visit Peugeot to do it?

You can buy replacement shell cases quite cheaply and transplant the parts over - but be aware that the key spring mechanisms are very fiddly.

So I recommend that you buy a shell with a blank key blade that you can get cut at a locksmith - as this is already fitted. Trying to dismantle the old spring and pin on these and refitting them is almost impossible without breaking it and then it is pretty much useless. The dealers will not replace these - they will only sell you a new one and code it for you.

So if I get a shell with a blank key blade it will of course come with a new spring?

I can't tell you what anything comes with as there are a lot of aftermarket sellers - but try and get something half decent. If you get one with a blank key blade in (of the same type as yours) the blade would already be attached and fixed inside - you just need to get your confidential key code that you should have or if not, from the dealer (on proof of ownership, identity and address etc.) for a small fee.

Then make sure you carefully move all the parts over to the new case. Remember though, until you have got the blade cut for the new fob, don't move the parts over from the old fob, or you won't be able to start the car as the transponder will be in the old fob with the circuitry.

I am not sure from your description whether your existing fob can be fixed by just re-tensioning the spring.

These fobs operate so that the spring pushes the blade into the open position when the button is pressed and the blade is pushed in manually to close it.

Are you saying that you cant push the blade to the closed position, or that it won't latch in that position?

I can push the blade back into the case, but the spring is too loose to hold the blade inside the case.

That is still confusing, the spring is supposed to push the blade out of the case, the blade is held in (against the spring) by a latch on the button.

Assuming that the case is not actually broken, the spring is tensioned:
  • remove the top cover of the key case,
  • pull the button out
  • with the key blade in the open position...
  • gently push the button and spring back in while twisting it, you should feel the end of the spring engage with the slot in the bottom of the case
  • When the end of the spring has engaged, twist the spring and button 90° - 180° anticlockwise until the button goes all the way into the case.
  • refit the top cover.

I found this one here https://www.keycasereplace.co.uk/citroe ... p-key-case
It worked well for me and was pretty straight forward to swap over including the old blade. Just have to be sure you move the transponder over too :-D
