OK I will give this a try as well. Thanks.

Can you tell me if PIN 3 is the red wire as shown in the photo, or is it the one attached to the fan power lead?
Pin 3 ?

If you disconnect the plug the pin numbers will definitely be on the plug somewhere. They may be very small & on the inner part of the plug.
The diagram is on my PC which is now shut down but can re check wire colour tomorrow afternoon if you cant see the pin number.

That didnt work either. I conected a wire from the positive terninal in the engine bay to number 3 on the plug with the ignition off. A small initial spark on the terminal then nothing and no response from the fan. The same when I tried again a minute later with the ignition on (engine not running). I also checked the two fuses on my multitester and they are OK. So does this mean the fan is faulty or could there be someting else like the relays which I have not tested.

Ah... I didnt disconnect the bottom resistor. Just going to do that now.

Nothing at all with both resistors unplugged, not even a spark.

Without a circuit diagram for this one, it will be difficult to make progress on this.
Relays and the two dropper resistances will be working together (with temp sensor(s) and likely an ECU) to produce - probably - three fan speeds.
Circuit details needed.

Marc here may be able to help with a circuit diagram.
Do post your VIN, which may be needed.

If we did need to access Parts info, then a forum donation would be necessary, as you will have read.
If you'd like to make a small donation anyway, details below...

A response to your question will require detailed vehicle information that requires you to have made a current contribution to the Forum.

Further Information

PS :!: You will need to be careful with making guesswork connections to the fan control circuit, as high currents (beefy fuses!) are involved, and a short-circuit could easily be created, which might damage wiring/relays/connectors.

Powering up pin 3 of one of the resistors should power up the fan unless there is a wiring fault between the plug & the motor or the fan motor is missing its earth.
Sorry its not a better picture, i dont know how to upload a wiring diagram to the forum.

The test you done above should completely bypass the relays. I would give the casing of the fan a few sharp taps with the head of a screwdriver then try again.

That circuit shot, although difficult to tead, confirms the set-up is one fan, 3 speed, controlled by a triple-output WTCU and temp sensor, with two dropper resistances.
Like the twin-fan triple-relay version, it is essential that motor and all three relays are switching correctly.

I have changed the pic of the diagram so its a bit better.
Yes its a 3 speed single fan setup.
Low & high speed is controlled by the injection ECU & mid speed is controlled by the A/C system.
Yes its critical that the 3 relays are switching correctly & the resistors are good but for the time being I would ignore them until we confirm that the fan motor is good.
As the fan motor is not operating when power is applied to pin 3 of one of the resistors when both disconnected I would concentrate on the circuit downstream of the resistors.
One other thing to be aware of just to add confusion is that on pin 3 of the black resistor plug the wire is RED but on the grey resistor plug pin 3 is the YELLOW wire

P.S. what is WTCU ? i've never herd this term before.
