Radiator Fan NOT Working Xsara Picasso 1.8sx 2003

Post by Fartblast »

The engine cooling fan on my 2003 Zara Picasso 1.8sx does not work. I took it for an MOT and they abandoned it when it overheated during the emissions test. Under normal driving conditions it does not overheat. I tested the two fan resistors with my multimeter and both .54 Ohm and .8 Ohm were faulty so I replaced with new ones, but the fan will still not work. When I switch the aircon on, I hear the clutch noise and there is a drop in power so I assume it is trying to work, but again the fan does not kick in. I'm not sure how to test the three green relay boxes and I don't know which fuse controls the fan, so any advice appreciated.

Almost certainly the Maxi fuse has blown - this is what happened to both our old Xsara and Mk1 C5. Unfortunately I can't point you at which one nor even where the fusebox is located!

Would be interesting to see the circuit diagram for that one, Marc — a triple relay set AND two resistors ??
Presumably a single fan.

Thanks for the replies. I know where the fuse boxes are, just not which one is for the fan as I cant find the information online.

The 2 main fuses you are interested in are maxi fuse 1 located underneath the under bonnet fusebox. Also the normal fuse 1 in the under bonnet fusebox.
Does the fan turn freely by hand? does the fan operate if you give it 12v directly on pin 1?
EDIT: I just saw your fusebox pic after i posted at the same time, are you sure this is a 2003 model? that is an earlier non com2000 model fusebox. Do you have the RP number? the changeover was 2001/2002 ish.
Ignore what I said about fuses above as that is for a later model fusebox.

A very good point. The cause of the of all the problems in both cars was the fan had seized up over winter when it wasn't needed.

Yes the fan turns freely and I purchsed the car brand new in March 2003. I have only taken off the bonnet cross member, not the bummper so I cant see the 12v feed. What is the RP number?

Need to know the RP number of the car (shown at E on the tyre pressure sticker or sometimes on the back of the interior fusebox cover)
Does it have single or automatic A/C?

Aircon is manual, just pus a button on the dash. Only three rows of RP numbers and letters on my car.

Ok so you car was actually built October 18, 2002. The RP number is the 9475.
Maxi fuses 2 & 3 are the ones you are interested in (middle 2 big fuses in the bottom row of your picture).
If you disconnect both the big resistors & power up pin 3 with 12v this should put the fan motor on full speed to prove the fan is ok.

I just checked and the fuses look good. Can you tell me the location of pin 3.

You say they look good but have you tested them with a meter or test light? Or possibly exchanging them with known good fuses?

No but they are not obviously blown. I will test them tomorrow. Thanks again.

I have had an occasion where the fuse had not blown, but corrosion on the fuse blades and holder clips stopped the rear wiper from working. I plugged/unplugged the fuse a few times and the wiper returned to normal service.
