The Lake District is an absolute gem, and Derwentwater/Keswick a jewel in the crown. Heres my highlights.
1. Gentle stroll up Latrigg.....you can even drive the car most of the way up leaving a literal gentle stroll to one of the finest viewpoints overlooking Kewsick and Derwent water beautifully framed with the mountains and fells behind.
2. A rowing boat/canoe on Derwentwater
3. Ashness bridge and Surprise view a couple of miles down the Borrowdale road. Another beautiful viewpoint.
and Booth's supermarket is always good for a supermarket picnic.
If you do brush Cockermouth itself on the way it is one of the less than 20 places in the Country which has a Church with a red clock

The castle is fabulous!
Went there with the school's "Castle Club" which for five bob a week was a brilliant skive every Friday, all day trip in a charabanc
That was the highlight of the year.
Been back once when the kids were little, so about 1987.

Re: Mick's Motoring March Meander
In the end I decided to give Keswick a miss and carry on to Cockermouth:
with it's previously mentioned clock, but not this one I think:
and down the A595 via Seascale Beach:
to catch a glimpse of The Hoad Monument at Ulverston:
and then back up to Hawkshead and across the Windermere Ferry:
to take me back to the M6 and down to Lancaster Services for a quick break en route to Blackpool:
See you in Liverpool!!

Its either the lens or the "auto-retrack" program in the Vcar guidance system playing tricks. Or it might be me making a male chicken jump!!

Re: Mick's Motoring March Meander
Well Blackpool was pretty deserted, only to be expected I suppose but I did manage the obligatory picture from the beach:
Now its on down the M6 and M58 for a royal pee in the poshest loo in Liverpool:
and a late lunch in The Philharmonic Pub:
with an incredible dining room:
After lunch I hope to snatch some quick shots of Beatles places and then on to the Mersey Tunnel and Chester.

Re: Mick's Motoring March Meander
Well lunch just had to be:
LANCASHIRE HOT POT
Slow-cooked pulled lamb in a rich red wine, rosemary and thyme sauce topped with sliced potatoes.
12.50
Yum yum!!
And now I am hovering around Liverpool, the one I recognise:
and the one that has grown since my last trip:
But I still found my favourite parts:
So now for the Mersey Tunnel!!

Re: Mick's Motoring March Meander
Being a foreigner to these parts I can only post up a picture from inside the tunnel and let you tell me which one it is Paul, better still perhaps you could post a picture of the entrance because I'm not sure which one is which!! I'll certainly give you a wave on the way out tho!!

Re: Mick's Motoring March Meander
It's very simple.
The original Mersey tunnel (Queensway) is four lanes and runs from near the centre of the town to Birkenhead. The "new" one (Kingsway) consists of two twin lane tubes and runs from just a bit further north and comes out in Wallasey. It then feeds directly into the M53.
Interesting fact about Queensway. It was closed for four days while they filmed a piece for Deathly Hallows Pt 1. I don't know why they bothered as they mucked the filming around so much with CGI that you couldn't even tell that there were four lanes.

Re: Mick's Motoring March Meander
Well I'm out and heading for Chester down the A41 (which interestingly I used to live 200 yards from in Watford).
And the tunnel looked like this:
Any ideas Paul?

The Queensway Tunnel also has the first heavy duty ventilation system to clear the exhaust fumes away.
