the dreaded low additive warning

Post by Bandit12 »

It was bound to happen, I've reached 125,000 miles and the additive warning signs popped up. In the past I successfully topped up on my 2002 2.2hdi with no problems but not done this on an X7 before and have a couple of questions.

! Where exactly is the additive tank? :? I had a look under the passenger side around the rear wheel but all I found were plastic panels. I presume its under one of them but which one and do i need any special tools?

2 Which additive? My RPO is 11505 so it looks like its 176. Looked online and found this,

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-Litre-Re-f ... Sw34FVHQNp

This is also listed as DPX 42 (what I used in my previous car) are they definitely compatible?

Also found some infineum F7995 which also appears compatible but this is over double the price!. Is one a better product than the other?

Any advice is appreciated

Your build date means you would of needed EOLYS 176, but that was replaced with INFINEUM F7995 now so that is what you need.
No, DPX42 cannot be mixed with Eolys 176 (what you probably have in your tank now) or with INFINEUM F7995.

Cheers Marc
I put the car up on ramps at the weekend and had a furtle around underneath and found the correct panel to remove and the tank. I can confirm it has green connectors so defo not powerflex. The tank looks really small compared to the one on my old 2.2hdi, maybe 3 litres max??
Does anyone know the capacity so i know how much infineum F7995 to order.
Also is it an easy job to reset the counter? I remember the total pain it was to reset the counter on my old 2.2 using lexia. A total faff involving removing the filler cap, waiting 5 minutes then adding 5 litres of diesel, waiting another 5 minutes- replacing the filler cap-waiting another 5 minutes blah blah blah -and after all that it still would not reset! Even the local citroen dealer gave up after 2 days and handed the car back saying "Even by quirky Citroen standards it made no sense"

The system on these looks at the distance to go before your next service interval and then calculates whether you have enough additive in the tank to make it until then. If there is enough, then it leaves the light off until the service interval (which they would expect the dealer to check at the requisite mileage anyway), but if it is likely to run out before then it puts the warning up earlier - as in your case.

You'll be pleased to know there is no separate additive ECU on the X7, as these used to require replacing on earlier models after topping up you may recall.

The capacity of the tank on this engine (DW10BTED4) is about 3.1 Lt. You have the Auto box so for 60k miles there would be about 1.5 Lt used - so double this and you are easily at the 3 Lt level. So I would get a 3 Lt kit if I were you.

Just follow the guided procedure in Diagbox but you must also prime the additive circuit too when finished. This can be found in the same areas as the additive filling operation.

Hi Marc
Many thanks for the advice and reassurance that this will be an easier job than on my old 2.2 HDI. Additive has been ordered and hopefully the top up process will go smoothly.

Bandit,

it is easy to add the fluid just follow the instructions with the kit.

Where did you buy the kit ?

I got mine from Eurocarcare Derby based company.

As Marc said follow diagbox procedure.

Re: the dreaded low additive warning

Post by Bandit12 »

Thanks for the advice guys, I got a genuine kit off ebay and after some messing about with the connections to the tank I have successfully topped it up. HOWEVER I now have another issue. I cant reset the service light/counter. I have spent the last 3 hours on diagbox looking for the correct folder but DPF/additive is simply not listed on the menu. I did a global test on all 3 menus (maintenance, fault finding and repairs) but failed to find anything helpful. Nearest I got was injection/ignition but that is for the diesel injectors.
Where on diagbox do I look?

Any help is appreciated

What version of Diagbox are you using? Is the interface full chip and Rev C?

If not using a Diagbox, what are you using?

It's simple Gino - after the Global test, locate the engine ECU from the list and select this and confirm, then from the following menus, it will be in one of those - either repair / pack repair / maintenance or similar (I'm a bit vague as it depends on your Diagbox version). If you have V7.02 then you can't do direct testing by ECU until V7.58. so you need to go through the Global Test first.

It will be very clear as to the option and will be a guided procedure, as you will also have to prime the additive adding circuit too - which will also be there.

Thanks Marc

I don't remember seeing engine ECU, I saw injection/ignition, BSI and BASHE 5 along with lots of other stuff but after staring at the screens for over 2 hours i was going a bit cross eyed. I've a half day tomorrow so I'll hook it back up to the diagbox and take a fresh look along with screen shot photos if I still struggle
Really appreciate your help:-)

It won't say Injection ECU - that would be too easy :-D

You have a Delphi Injection system, but just look at the icons on the left after the Global test and look for the one that resembles a Spark Plug. That will be the injection ECU.
