2013 DS5 Jerk when put into drive

Post by zipdip »

Hi all well last year for no reason I got a shove in the back everytime I put the car into drive,it lasted about a month, then it vanished,so last week it came back
the weird thing is that starting from cold I put it into reverse no jolt, then into drive no jolt, then drive say two miles and when you put the car into drive you get a small jolt, after that it is wham in the back time, because this does not happen everytime I doubt it is the box and it went away again if a box is at fault that would not happen,I was wondering if it could be a faulty brake switch or whatever tells the box the brake is applied, the car has done 54000 miles and drives very well with all the gears changing just fine.

I doubt very much it is a faulty brake switch - these are usually very robust being a safety system.

I think your issue is more likely to be either with the box, the oil level of the gearbox or the software of the gearbox ECU - but you need to get it onto Diagbox to read any fault codes first, then put the codes up here.

Ok will try and get it onto a diabox,I take it thats the citroen own diagnostics, like Star is for MB,I notice that the auto box on these cars is supposed to be sealed for life,if I was to get my mechanic to change the gearbox oil how easy is it to replace and how much is needed.

Can you post up your VIN so we know exactly what you have. There is no such thing as sealed for life on the Auto boxes.

Despite marketing hype, the oil does need changing on the Auto boxes - and regularly if you want to maintain it. If this is the AM6 box, then there is a procedure to be followed to change it, that we can advise on once we have your VIN to confirm. It does involve using a diagnostic tool like Diagbox to ensure the gearbox oil is at the correct temperature before draining. It can also only be partially changed as there is some oil in the torque converter that remains. So the oil has to be changed in stages over several operations to ensure as much as a full change as possible is undertaken. The Gearbox ECU oil counter also has to be reset after each change to ensure correct operation.

Ok so you missed an ‘F’ out of your VIN, but I have it now and as suspected you have the AM6 6 speed Auto box.

So the info I mentioned earlier applies. I’ll link to the procedure shortly.

Usually if there is an issue with the gearbox you should get a message on the display about it. I suggest you get it hooked up for a diagnostic and see what codes you get back though.

Thanks for that Marc,so it is a little like the Mercedes gearbox oil change the oil has to be at a certain temperature when you empty the box, will there be some left in say the torque converter or whatever goes for it in this AM6 box, used to do all my own servicing years ago, could I do this oil change, could you point me to a cheap diagnostic tool that would do the job,I have had no message on the dash about a fault, look forward to getting the procedure from you, given you cannot empty the box compleatly does it say how much should come out.

Draining & Refilling AM6C Auto Box (DS5)

Always replace the following parts:
  • Drain Cap Seal
  • Gearbox Oil Filler Plug Seal
Recommended Tool
AM6 A.PNG
Topping up Cylinder - Tool 0340
Note: (zipdip) - You have a Euro 5 vehicle and therefore you need AW-1 oil oil - not JWS 3309.

The oil type "AW-1" in AT6 and AM6 gearboxes with engine version Euro 5 is specific and cannot be replaced with oil type "JWS 3309".

Drain& Refill

CAUTION: The gearbox must be drained when the oil is hot (60 °C minimum), to eliminate the impurities suspended in the oil.

N.B. : The oil change is partial, since the converter cannot be totally drained.

Put the vehicle on a hoist.
Remove the under engine protection.
AM6 B.PNG
Remove:
  • The oil level plug (2) using a torx wrench
  • The oil overflow and drainage plug (1) ; Using a 6 -sided wrench
N.B.: Approximately 3 litres of oil should flow out.
Refilling

Fit:
  • The oil overflow and drainage plug (1) (equipped with a new seal)
  • The top-up plug (2)
Remove the air filter housing.
AM6 C.PNG
Remove the filler plug (3).
Use tool [0340].
Dry gearbox oil capacity: Approximately 7 litres.
Type of oil (Red):

EURO 5 engine: AW-1 oil
EURO 4 engine: JWS 3309 ESSO oil

Volume of oil remaining after draining: Approximately 4 litres.
Quantity of oil to be replaced: Approximately 3 litres.
Refit the filler plug (3) (equipped with a new seal).
Initialise the used oil counter (Follow the diagnostic equipment procedure).

Check the Oil Level

Prior conditions:
  • Vehicle level
  • Check that the gearbox is not in downgrade mode
  • Remove the filler plug (3)
  • Add 0,5 additional litres of oil in the gearbox
  • Apply the brakes firmly and move the lever through the various selector positions
  • Gear lever in position "P"
  • Engine running at idle
  • Oil temperature 60°C (+ 8 ; - 2 °C) (Measurement of the parameters using diagnostic equipment)
Remove the oil level plug (2)

If there is a stream of oil then reducing to a sequence of drips:
Refit the oil level plug (2).

If there is a sequence of drips or nothing:
  • Refit the oil level plug (2).
  • Stop the engine.
  • Add 0,5 additional litres of oil in the gearbox.
  • Repeat the top-up procedure.
N.B.: The level of oil is correct when the stream of oil becomes drop by drop.

Refit the oil level plug (2) (equipped with a new seal).

Refit:
  • The oil filler plug (3) (equipped with a new seal)
  • The protective panel under the engine
  • The air filter housing
Too high a fluid level can cause:
  • Overheating of the fluid
  • Fluid leaks
Too low a level causes destruction of the gearbox.

As you'd expect from the claims that it is "sealed for life", there isn't therefore a manufacturer recommended schedule for changing the gearbox oil. :-D

I have a manual box, but some will change it more regularly than others - some every 20k, some every 50k or 60k - it's entirely up to you, but the oil isn't exactly cheap - but it's well known that changing the gearbox makes a big difference to the operation of the box.

But as said - you can't fully drain the oil in one go, so some have done the oil change over 3 months - once per month to try and get all the dirty oil out - others may do it once but every year - you get the picture. I suppose it depends on your mileage and how long you intend keeping it / peace of mind really.

The problem with a bump into drive is likely to be due to a worn or sticking solenoid in the transmission, and an oil change may or may not help.
The long-term intermittent nature of the fault indicates that the auto-adaptive software algorithm is adjusting the pressure characteristics, perhaps increasing the pressures to compensate for a different problem.
It would be a good idea to have the transmission fault codes read and the auto-adaptives reset to see if this provides a cure, even if temporary.

When I got new seals for my partial change the other week I was talking to the gaffer at the local Cit dealership and he recommends every 100 - 120K kms, so about 70K miles. With the French predominantly driving French cars the mechanics over here seem to know a lot more about them and their failures. He also mentioned re-torquing injectors and carrying out oil changes more frequently.
The initial dump of oil just needs to be nice and hot, the temperature is only necessary when setting the level.
Get a good quality torx bit and a breaker bar for the filler, they are bloody tight. Also get a spare level plug screw, they are pence, when you get the o ring and crush washer.
Pete
Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone
