i finally got the time to look at it again. got it up on 4 axel stands and looked at the height sensors, unplugged them and the wiring wasnt corroded at all, took it back of the stands. turned on the engine and the fluid started overflowing from the reservoir as it seemed to be full of tiny bubbles. i turned it off and let it unbubble, turned it on and it started rising up to normal.
so everything works- up and down , but, when the engine is running the pump is always running and after about 4 minutes its getting very hot-turn it off. when i open a door the pump works for about 10 seconds. back to the start-is the pump feked?

So I suspect after you raised the wheels off the ground and returned it, you may of got the fluid (and any air locked inside) moving through the system after this little episode.

If the pump is constantly running, then there is likely either more air in the system and the pump isn't getting enough fluid or another issue. Do another check on the LOWEST suspension setting.

Now you have it working, raise to highest position, then lowest, then turn wheel lock to lock very slowly a few times. Switch off engine and check LDS level is between the marks shown previously. Top up if necessary. A lot of 'fizzing' of tiny air bubbles means there is air in the system.

Repeat the procedure several times until it settles down. The pump should not be operating continuously when the car is at normal height setting.

Remember if you ever have to raise the car off the ground in future, where the wheels will be hanging freely and unsupported, you should ALWAYS raise the car to the highest suspension setting first, then remove the LDS tank cap slowly (as it is pressurised) before raising the car off the ground. Many tyre fitters are not aware of this and the sudden return of the vehicle to the ground causes the fluid to rush back into the tank and can split it or cause damage to the internals under the extreme pressure of the hydraulic fluid returning under the weight of the car coming back down suddenly and uncontrolled.

Fluid should be between 'a' & 'b' on the lowest suspension setting.

Some time back I had to get tyres changed on my C5. The tyre fitters commented that they often struggled with these, as they would then bottom out and trap their jacks. I raised her to full height, loosened the cap to the LDS reservoir, and let them get on with it. They were VERY surprised when, after they changed the tyres and lowered the jacks, she remained at full height. They said they would try to remember that trick in future.

The DVLA has these instructions on a page that is highlighted for every C5 when a garage signs a car in for a new MOT Test.

I know Quick-Fit do as well, but do they ever consulate it ? ....I bet not :)

I had a thought about this (in the middle of the night :( ) if the pumps running but not lifting the car could it be that the drive between the electric motor and the pump is broken? There's a rubber joint in there iirc.

so the pump raises lowers the car as it should, when the pump is raising the car theres a normal pump sound, when it gets to the height or its being lowered theres a different sound coming from the pump, a sort of higher pitch and not as loud, which doesnt shut up and makes the pump too hot after 5 mins.
i tried the raising lowering turning wheel thing about 14000 times, but to no avail. i have noticed that of the 3 wires that power the pump, the little exciter? wire is always live when the engine is on, and goes dead 10-20 seconds after turning the engine off.
i also tried driving it over every pothole i could find for about 4 minutes to see if that could somehow sort it, no joy :(
