The foil is just a heat shield over the rear silencer.

Looking like a good find, Alasdair.
Inside pretty much the same colour (alcantara grey) as our XM here.
That radio code site should provide your code - have used it myself.
Would have thought any heat shielding would be under the boot floor...???
At least no shortage of circuit diagrams..... \:D/

I can't remember if there is a heat shield underneath as well, but I can't see any other purpose for the foil!

The leak into the rear will be the inner membrane on the boot door coming away. Really you need to remove the liner and then the membrane then re-stick it with something super sticky - there is a thread about it somewhere which recommended some double sided foam type tape from 3M (for caravans IIRC....!)

It's unusual for the wing edge to go rusty, and not the door shut....!

Ta for the radio links.....I will look at that..

I have inspected the rear wing a little more......there is zero rust damage to any of the inner wing or wheel arch panels...just the "dropped edge" of the outer wing...very strange as I expected the standard corrosion area that involves all three forms.

Boot plastic seal, the very first thin Jim said to me yesterday :)....my oh my the carpet is wet so I am glad I have removed it.

Rear seats removed, rear carpet has foam.....will release the rear screws from the seats and extract it for drying.....and I have NOT found any £1 coins yet which is very annoying !

Yep.....that was the cause....you can see the dirty stains and some fine soil debris on the bottom of the insulation and door card.
20200306_115105.jpg
The plastic is rippled from being stretched during a previous removal. The is evidence of it being reapplied 2 or 3 times, sticky tape, some silicon and some black mastic residue covered the boot and the plastic.

The plastic membrane just ripples all by itself, which is what causes it to fail in the first place. I wonder if it might be better stuck on, then a bar screwed on over the top to hold it down.

To straighten the edge, there's also some black plastic U-shaped binding strip (as used to slide-bind up to about 3mm of papers). which is good at remaining straight. Stationers sell it in A4 lengths, and some hardware depots have it in 1m lengths.
