The MAXI fuses are under the fuse box on a sceond "layer".

Mostly the pumps blow due to a build up of carbon crud inside and short. The pumps can be switched and the original ECU switched over. (have it cleaned and re-brushed before fitting it ?)

i checked the big fuse with a multimeter and its fine. the haynes doesnt have a wiring diagram for the pump, is the main power wire in the 10? pin connector on the front of it?

If you go to the front right where the pump is located you should see the wiring loom feeding it. Open the loom (Cut back the wrapping with a craft knife) there are three wires, two thick ones and a thin one, the thick ones are the live and earth, you can check if the voltage is getting there by pushing a needle into each and measuring the voltage with a meter.

If you have voltage there and the pump doesn't run then most likely your pump's died, you can further check by applying 12 volts to the thin wire which should cause the motor to run if it's good.

right, spliced a wire from the battery to the thin wire and the pump whirred into life, it didnt actually raise the suspension though. a brake master cylinder of a mk6 transit has the same thread as the fluid reservoir, drilled a small hole in it and pressurised the reservoir with air. didnt do anything :? took splice off and the pump still works as it should- opening the door etc, for about 20-40 seconds, but doesnt raise the car. also no smell of burning.
im guessing that means the pump is buggered

I think the pump itself is not 'buggered' if it runs, It might be the bsi on the pump but usually if the pump runs it should only need bleeding, are you sure there is enough fluid in the system?

The steering is supplied with LDS from the same reservoir as the suspension, but they are entirely different circuits.

To bleed the system follow my guide here from the relevant part on bleeding after the refitting section:
