C5 X7 RT4 - Fitting Factory Amplifier

This unit is the RT4 and RT5 system and is made by Magneti Marelli
Main differences between RT4 & RT5 - RT5 has Bluetooth Hands Free, faster Navigation calculation and on C4 & C4 Picasso only, USB ports and a High-Res screen.

C5 X7 RT4 - Fitting Factory Amplifier

Post by Fortius »

Hi everyone! I've recently bought this HIFI system for my car. I have 4 woofer, 4 tweeters and the amplifier. I don't have the subwoofer. From the above diagram I've (almost) managed to understand which wire is which... However, I have the following questions:

1. Where do I connect CAN+, CAN High and VAN low?
2. Where do i connect the rear left and right tweeter?
3. Why does the amplifier have a left and right output for the bass module (subwoofer i guess).
4. From where can I get signal for the signal inputs of the amplifier (RH audio system input and LH audio system input - 16way black connector). The RT3ev/RT4 does not have line output, as far as i know!
5. Are there any other diagrams, schematics or anything else that I can use?

Any help is highly appreciated! Have a great week!

Here is the circuit diagram and a list of all the connections. I will shortly put up the pin out connections specifically for the Amp as it relates to the RT4 - the table in the other thread is similar, but better to have the correct one.

I assume you have an RT4 fitted from your post. That being the case here is the electrical diagram for the Audio Amp to RT4:

So here are the pin outs for the Audio Amp as they relate to the RT4 in the C5 X7:
RT4 Amp Pin Out D.PNG
Connectors
(1) Audio amplifier.
"a" 16-way black connector.
"b" 16-way white connector.
"c" 16-way blue connector .

Role
The audio amplifier amplifies the 4 audio outputs of the audio system/audio-navigation and divides them into 8 amplified outputs:
2 outputs for the front woofers
2 outputs for the front tweeters
2 outputs for the rear tweeters and woofers connected in parallel
2 outputs for the bass acoustic enclosure

Electrical Features

The connection to the audio amplifier is by means of 3 connectors (The 3 connectors are of the SICMA 16-way type):
  • The black connector transmits the low power information and the supplies
  • The blue connector transmits the power information to the right-hand speakers
  • The white connector transmits the power information to the left-hand speakers

You are a brave man to attempt the factory amp installation.

Bear in mind yo uwill need some time on Diagbox to change the amplifier mode on the RT4 once installed (or possibly before).

Could you elaborate about the Diagbox? After all the connections are made, the amplifier will not work as such? I don't have Lexia or Diagbox, and I don't know how to change mode on the RT4.

Note, my HU is RT3ev (I understand that it is identical to RT4).

Thank you!

Several things to bear in mind:

As EDC5 says, you will need to change the Amplifier setting in the BSI to tell it you have an Equaliser Amp. Only do this when you have completed the project.

'Presence of an audio Equaliser Amplifier' - change to present

The actual Intermediate wiring harnesses for vehicles with an Equaliser Amp option were different - as the speaker connections are different for this setup. As you can see from the 'role' section in my last post, some of the outputs for the rear tweeters and woofers are connected in parallel.

A lot of those harnesses are no longer available from Citroen. So have a think about this before going ahead.

Regarding the harnesses problem, I will do the appropiate connections to the actual harnesses from my car. As long as I know which cable goes where, that is not a problem. Do you think there will be any problems after I connect to the CAN BUS?

Marc, thanks for the input, but on the new pin out that you posted, I don't see any amplifier inputs from the head unit. On connector "a", pins 4&5 and 11&12 are assigned as output; is there a typo?

If I understood correctly, I have to connect the speaker outputs (front left and right) from the RT4 head unit to the inputs of the amplifier (left and right). After using Lexia or Diagbox and 'Presence of an audio Equaliser Amplifier' is changed to "present" as you said, I suppose that the head unit will change the type of the signal output in a way that the amplifier can process. Is that correct?

Again I want to mention that my head unit is not RT4, is RT3eV. I have attached 2 pictures with the HU.

Thank you all for your involvement so far!

That is the official RT4 unit as fitted at factory, despite the label on the back - that is what PSA refer to it as.

No Typos - like I said there was a different vehicle intermediate harness for models fitted with the equaliser amp - you won't have those connections on your exiting harness:

There are actually 16 different Intermediate harnesses for the various options and head units fitted for the X7 Estate alone....
RT4 Harness.PNG
That's why it will probably mean you having to manually create all the wiring needed and that is something I can't help you with personally. It's not something I would of attempted myself as I know these things are notoriously difficult to retro-fit.

Is there any way to identify the type of harness installed in my car?
I'm thinking that if I know the part number maybe there is a schematic with it and using that I can cut/solder wires to retrofit the amplifier.
But, the primary problem remains from where do I get the signal from the head unit and where do I plug that signal into the amplifier?

Re: C5 X7 RT4 - Fitting Factory Amplifier

There are CAN network connections from the Amp to the BSI shown in the diagram (Black connector, pins 7 & 14) and again a different CAN connection from the BSI to the RT4. It's a multiplexed Amp - so it's not just a matter of cutting and splicing - if you do that on the CAN network, you may have operational problems with the car as the data network transmits other data to other unrelated ECUs on the Comfort network.

So what I am saying is that because you don't have the correct electrical loom installed that would have the connections to the amp (which would then have the CAN wiring to the BSI) there's nothing to wire in.

But here is an electrical diagram for the X7 with Equaliser Amp fitted so you can see the wiring:

See my earlier post for the equipment otems in the tables (8424 is the Amp) - and all those wiring connections are missing on your car.

OK, thank you for the info. So I guess that in the end, there is no way to install this amp on my car using the actual harnesses, is there?

Put it this way - it would probably be easier to get an aftermarket amplifier that will work with what you do have I suspect.

I like a challenge, but I don't want to have different problems in the future.. If only I knew that before I bought the system...

I do have another question though: I've tested the 4 door speakers (woofers) on my system and they work fine, but each tweeter from this setup (Philips HIFI System tweeters) is heard very dim (you can almost not hear them at all). At first I thought that the first tweeter had a problem, then the second, and the third and the fourth. I thought that they don't work proper because the signal is not coming from the amplifier, hence the need and desire to install the factory amp...

I can not find any technical information about the speakers and the tweeters. No power output, ohms and so on...

There are a different set of speakers for systems with the Hi-Fi option and the wiring that goes to them from the amp is specific, so they won't get powered properly from a normal system without the amp or the amp wiring to the speakers.

That's why is's such a job and often requires re-wiring all the speakers and tearing the car up to do it :-D

I will tear up the car and put it back together, as long as i find what goes where! :))
So far I understand that it's very hard to do this retro fit, but not impossible... I still have some questions... don't know if I'll find the answers.

Anyway, no one has done this until now? No other crazy person like me?
