That is true as well, time will tell I suppose, but engine has compression as turning it is quite hard, I did so by selecting 5th gear and turning one wheel, lots of resistance at the top of the stroke, which would indicate that the valve open and close as they should, or at least I think so, but there is no telling that for sure.

Speaking of easy start, I tried, and nothing... not even a puff, which leads me to believe the cam is in incorrect position, hence why the markings that I have dont line up.
The original pump had a piece broken on the inside which probably was the cause of the car being parked, the pump that was installed had water damage.

Lets hope Peter sees this soon, I need to give him a call, and perhaps demystify a few things..

I don't know what you plan to do with this car if you get it running, but beware that the French bureaucracy can make life very difficult if you want to re-register it but don't have the carte grise for the car or if the previous owner (or legal representative) has not signed a certificate of cessation . If you have not already got these documents, try very hard to get them. This may not be an issue for you if you intend to export the car and the destination country is not so strict on the source country documentation.

Ah, no-go with easy start does point to an issue with compression in one form or another. Given the timing marks don't line up I would think that valve timing is the reason.

Considering that you can still feel compression to some degree, I wouldn't expect it to be far enough out to have damaged anything even if this is an interference engine & at this point I think short of any other advice/knowhow I'd personally be carefully resetting the timing, making sure to turn things slowly into line and making sure I didn't clatter a valve into a piston, just in case.

If I were a betting man, I'd wager the owner replaced the failed pump & somehow lost time at that point, then the "new" pump either was duff from the word go, or was a red-herring and had in fact worked. Then, says I, the owner lost interest & garaged it, sadly passing before rekindling the desire to sort it. Fingers crossed it's as simple as timing it up & fitting the repaired fuel system.

Carte grise and the certificate of cessation is in my possession. Thnx for the tip!! And the plan is to drive it home to Norway :)

I now that some diesels wont start with ether, which could possibly be the case here.
I will take a photo of the markings on the gears, but without consultation I am hesitant to change their position.
Does anyone know a number for Peter?

Dug out this old post from Peter. (15 years ago now!) If you want to contact him just send a PM

Unfortunately if his post is accurate he mentions that his CX manual went walkabout :-D
Peter.N. wrote: 31 May 2005, 19:33 The CX engine doesn't have balancer shafts it is a nice simple OHV unit with the cam belt only driving the camshaft and pump (the only OHV engine I have ever heard of with a timing belt) and very easy to change (compared to the XM) It's the 2.5 XM OHC engine, an XUD derivative that has the balancer shafts, very complicated and even more difficult to work on than the 2.1 td, which is why I favour the latter.
'fastandfurious' has pointed you in the direction of the breather, it's about ten years since I had my last CX so the memory is fading as it is generally! I do remember a quite large bore hose going to the rocker cover but can't remember where the other end went. Someone borrowed my CX manual and didn't return it.
They were a brilliant engine in their time, the first really refined diesel, even the non turbo one was quite nippy. I used to fit Perkins engines into all sorts of things until the CX arrived, after that I didn't see the need.

Just had a look in the workshop & found I still have my original Haynes CX manual. Missing it's cover & the first few pages but pretty well complete. Unfortunately it doesn't cover the diesel engines.
I had 1 petrol, 1 non-turbo, a turbo & a Turbo2 diesels & all were Safaris. I drove hundreds of thousands of miles in mine with minimal problems. As far as i recall all the diesels had toothed belts which I changed frequently. I assumed they were cambelts rather than just driving the pump but it was a long time ago. The Turbo 1 I sold with 366k miles & it went on to do many many more before it rusted out. I loved those cars!!
I don't need the manual any more so it's free to a good home.

Thank you for the offer Adrian,
mine does not have a belt, but gears are doing its job instead.
It seems to me that most manuals dont cover the early diesel.

Me too. I did about 160k in my Turbo CX25 Dtr Turbo Safari, best car I had ever driven. I checked Ebay, loads of manuals but all petrol except a couple of very expensive ones.

I am in contact with 'Afaholic'

It seems to me that I got myself a CX with a rather rare Diesel engine, as everyone I come across has the timing belt version. Not sure whether that is a good or a bad thing. I should have the pump here next week, but in all honesty I have my doubts, something is telling me that there are more problems than the pump itself. I also need to figure out the correct installation position for the Roto-Diesel pump, so I would get my timing somewhat correct.

I have a vague recollections of there being a hole in the side of the pump that you can insert a pin to lock it in TDC positon on No 1, but I don't know which end that was, probably the same as the petrol one, but it was a long time ago! It was only the turbo diesels that had the timing belt, about 1986 onward. The great thing was that if that broke all that stopped was the pump so no damage

If you have a local diesel specialist they may be able to tell you, if they have someone that's been in the trade long enough.

Hi Taras,

Have just spoken with a Citroen mechanic in UK who worked on the CX25's, including the "all-gear" diesel engines.
He has asked for the car's VIN number, so he can look for correct timing info/instructions.
If you can post it, I'll email him.
