Don't you just hate it when captive nuts make a poor attempt to escape!

Rich, as an interesting diversion to take your mind of the frustration of those spinning nuts, if you like late 60's and 70's nostalgic pictures of Newcastle and Tyneside pubs, clubs, shops, and cars of that period this is a real treat.

Surely some one has come up with a way around it? I hate it when things could be so simple for the sake of a bit of thought. Years ago I had a 405 with a blocked Heater matrix, its a massive dash out job , one lad locally has done loads of them it was more than the cars worth, Guy in Australia on a forum showed me how to do it in 20 mins!

Thanks for that Neil, brings back some memories. I am done now with this heap . It will cost me 150 plus to get the job done but my garage cant do it as they only have one lift and that is used for MOT s. They cant do cambelt either for same reason, will take up lift for too long.So it will be for sale I am due some money later this year and will be buying something nearly new, but for now it will be another cheap van to get me about for a few months.

What sort of captive nuts? Citroen ones are usually in a spring steel case that just clips into the frame, if it those cut the head off the bolt and hit them out.

I have no idea, but the subframe still needs to come off to access them.

I'm pretty sure that a mechanic with the necessary nous would get around that. :-D

My regular garage would have done the job if there was another lift available, but there are only 2 mechanics and one MOT tester, so this is why he can’t take the job on and there workshop next door to the mot bay is only suitable for cars, even if I took the roof rack and ladders off the van ,it still wouldn’t fit in. I have spoken to my neighbour across the road and he is going to ask his mechanic for a price, for the timing kit as well. He has a much bigger unit and 5 lifts. I would rather get it done if I could get it done cheap, as that way I don’t have the hassle of swapping the van a second time when my inheritance comes through. But there is no point in spending 500quid on these jobs if I’m selling it in a few months,as that money has been spent for someone else’s benefit.

Sure I'm missing the obvious - but, then what?

I wouldn't want to deal with a garage that uses not having an available lift as an excuse for not doing a cambelt, 1,000's of which must have been done in peoples' drives (or even out in the road) over the years. Makes you wonder what jobs they are prepared to do.

My method would probably be to tack a new nut onto the end of a bit of welding wire and feed it through some convenient space around the subframe into place or maybe a bolt on the welding wire and drop it through from above, it doesn't matter that the new item's not captive it's not usually going to be removed for a very long time.
The original captives are there for the convenience of the factory assembly line.

For that you could just use some tough glue. :-D

The only stuff I can think of that MIGHT work is Araldite - & you'd have to do it the week before (well, 48 hours, say).
