They are really professional tools - and are not cheap - Laser tools do them - but these often contain a kit with adaptors for a wide application of marques - so £400-500 is normal for this sort of tooling - so not something the DIY mechanic would necessarily have. They do seem to be widely used: Here's an example of one:

Well the good news it that has one less '0' at the end of the price than most!

I hope they have a suitable adaptor for your C3 - maybe worth checking.

Yes, your C3 Picasso uses POWERFLEX additive. It is the pouch type. The part number is: 9678033980 and these are 1.1 Litre pouches.

We put a new auto adjust clutch in my mate's C5 - didn't use one of these tools and it was fine afterwards. I can't really see what it's doing TBH - the pressure plate is like 1/4" thick - as long as you carefully tighten down the bolts evenly then you are not going to distort the plate. Maybe I am missing something....!

This: https://www.repxpert.com/en/mediadocume ... ecBr-PC/en contains lots of info about Self Adjusting clutches. This is the only bit which references the reason for the setting tool

Using a special tool is an absolute must to ensure correct
installation of the Self-Adjusting Clutch. No counteracting
forces must be applied during installation to prevent early
rotation of the adjusting ring in the clutch pressure plate.

I'm unsure as to how you would apply counteracting forces to move the ring.... but maybe if you pull the pressure plate down against the spring there is a risk that it upsets the SAC mech. If you can get the tool for not too much cash, then it seems worthwhile to avoid having to get the box out again!

Ok, im mid way on this, going fairly well, one ballache was that one of the selector rod connectors seems to have popped or broken on removal :/ looks like i can secure it but may need to do something with that.

That's it in the pic. Getting to the top bolt is 'interesting' to say the least. Although it's not shown in Marc's diagram, there might be another bolt in from the other side, invisible under the stat housing.

The first pic in the reassembly section in Marc's post with the procedure shows the location of the engine/box bolts.

You might be able to glue that ball joint back together, but I rather suspect it's had it... unfortunately it only comes as a complete unit:
gear cables.JPG
It's just a smidge under £250 from Citroen however.... scrapyard might be a possibility!

Thanks guys!

Yep starter was a ballache you def need a heck of a selection of tools as you only have about an inch of range to get a handle in. Not too bad tho once i got the wiring off.

Second annoyance was the top bolts on the gearbox, they are obstructed by a rather firm wiring harness that is itself bolted to the housing, once thats off however the top 2 bolts become accessible.

I didnt have to take off the exhaust downpipe as some had suggested, there was a nut and stud to be removed and then the gearbox bolt was accessible.

I did take off the cooling fan as it gave loads more room id strongly recommend this, although it did involve removing coolant pipes so i just drained the coolant system since it was on my long term to do list.

And as for that connector im gonna put everything back together and see if i can bodge a solution for now. Popping those off was a lot harder than had been suggested i prob should have bought some ball joint separators

Now to pop off the clutch and take a look compare to new one and hope the effing match!!
