Jan 2005 Dispatch 815D Comm2000 stalk fault

Post by nginmu »

Jan 2005 Dispatch 815D Comm2000 indicator stalk fault

raise indicator stalk to indicate right - normal operation

lower indicator stalk to indicate left - sporadic operation

sometimes it indicates left just fine, sometimes nothing happens, sometimes the relay goes clickityclickityclickity very fast with no lights coming on

if it doesn't work immediately, it's always possible to nudge it into perfect operation by very gently pressing the lowered stalk forward.

does this tend to be easily fixable by dismantling the column / opening up the unit / cleaning contacts / tightening up screws etc, or, is it more likely to involve replacing the whole unit, reprogramming things, etc..

all and any thoughts and advice greatly appreciated in advance.

It depends - it the answer. There are various designs of these modules. The stalk can wear the 'track' as it passes over constantly when you use the indicator to turn left or right. There's very little you can do - it just wears out and sooner or later the other side will go too.

It's coming on for 16 years old so has done its duty, so I wouldn't faff with it and just get a replacement unit. You can usually get a fully refurbished one or brand new. If you want the part number I'll need your VIN - these are VERY specific units and have to be correct or they will not work.

Ok, so this has the earlier individual stalk modules. On these, it's the internals that wear out.

The part number is: 625369. Watch out on ebay as there are some pretty grotty used ones for the same price you can get a new Valeo one.

Here's a link with some options - the Valeo one looks a good buy:

https://spareto.co.uk/oe/625369

No programming, just remove the old one and plug the new one in. Be aware of the airbag and always disconnect the battery and leave the vehicle for 15 minutes after to discharge the Airbag ECU capacitor. I don't have a removal fitting guide, but should be relatively easy:

Fantastic info, that's so helpful - many many thanks!

On the listing you posted, there's one without a picture - MAXGEAR® 50-0150 - at a markedly lower price than the others. Is there something wrong with that particular one? Had to ask..

edit.. in fact, ebaying that part number seems to bring up a lot of examples of new stalk units which look like the right one, at really very low prices (in the £10 - £20 range). No doubt spurious copies though.

edit.. will I have to remove the steering wheel and or airbag? or can they stay in place..

I suspect you will in order to bet to the module behind - but just be aware of the wiring on the airbag centre boss module as you remove the centre part, and of any audio control harnesses.

As for the other parts on that listing - your guess is as good as mine - but expect to get what you pay for... I usually find that's a good guide.

As this is not a com2000 & just a bog standard indicator switch it may be replaceable without steering wheel removal. Many of them are, cant remember specifically on the Dispatch.
Once the cowlings are off turn the steering wheel 90 degrees to the left & this should let you get at the 2 torx screws holding it in (T-10 from memory). The trick is if you have an adjustable steering column drop it fully down & pull the steering column fully out towards you, this normally gives you enough clearance for the stalk to slide out.

Ordered a valeo 625369 from a UK seller with a UK business address, noticed a lot of the cheaper ones have 'wrong' decals using alternative symbols / different typeface than the original, the one I've got coming does hopefully at least look like the original.

Thanks for the tips & info.

Thanks folks, job was easy - as per wheeler's tips.

Just undid the outer of the 2 torx screws, that's all that was needed to allow the unit to slide out leftwards with plugs attached.

Somebody had stripped the threads on the cowl fixing screws & had reattached cowl with superglue. So had to reattach with more superglue. But all fine & dandy now.
