Peugeot 5008 Fans intermittent / not working

Post by wattsey4u2day »

Today when I was driving, I had my fans on to keep the windscreen clear. Then whilst I was driving, the fans got slower, and slower and then eventually went off. I turned the car off, started it back up again and they came on again but wouldn't get up to speed and slowly died again. I've heard about a heater blower resistor that could possibly have gone wrong. Where would I find this? My car is a Right Hand Drive 2.0 litre.

Ok, on your 5008, you have the Automatic A/C control with additional blower for the rear.

The Heater Control module is item (6), part number: 6441CQ and costs £153.20 from Peugeot.

You can get cheaper units - but beware of quality and longevity.

There is a Hella one here for £65, which is a decent brand.

Hmm...
You know your car best, but is it possible that this is just normal behaviour when
- a temp is selected
- air flow is directed to windscreen (to demist)
- selected cabin temp is reached, and fan backs off ?

If you selected "Demist", that can send all/most air to screen, and also boost the fan.
Could be time-limited...
Try putting on a normal (face+feet) setting, and see what happens.

If demisting is selected on these, then it will remain at the higher fan speed and directional settings until AUTO is reselected or demist is turned off. Only the AUTO mode for the Climate system regulates the air flow and temperature Chris.

There is definitely something wrong with it. I can confirm that Auto isnt on and the demist feature is also off. On my way home from work after the car was sat for 7 hours, the fans worked on full power as normal, but after 5 minutes, they started to slowly die off again (selected on face and windscreen). I then turned them off completely and put them back on again to full power but they wouldnt come on. With the heater control module, where would I find that roughly?

I've had a look and this being a 5008 does not show a specific procedure to get to the blower motor, yet alone the module that is attached to it. It looks quite scary to be honest, words fascia and dash come to mind....

I think it might be worth a trip to your dealer in this case to see if they can diagnose it as definitely the module or not (Diagbox will be able to test this) and if at fault the cost. Normally I would be able to get you a procedure, but in this case it is missing, which from experience does not bode well!

I'd suggest 2 hours to do and about £400 ish with a Hella part - more if using an OEM part. But they should take off the cost of any diagnostic if they do the job.

Haha that definitely sounds like a job and a half! But ever the optimist, I shall use my ear to see if i can pinpoint the blower motor and see how easy it is to get to it. Given the cars at 238,500 miles, im not too bothered about a few minor scratches on the dash or fascia. If I can find it, il let you know!

It's probably the same as the C4 Picasso, and the blower will be above the throttle pedal and is relatively easy to remove to once you have removed the panel above the pedals. I suspect you will find the control board is OK, but the blower itself has got water in it (it spills over when the scuttle drains are blocked), or it's just worn out. You may be able to take the motor out of the housing (there's probably a screw under the label on the bottom) which will allow you access to the bottom bush to get some lube on it which may help. Haven't watched all of this, but it gives an idea. I imagine that you will be able to get a 2nd hand blower from a breaker easy enough.

Thanks Richard. Ive ordered a 2nd hand blower resistor and will try that first and see if I have any luck. Failing that il check the blower motor itself

So this morning I had a crack at replacing the blower motor resistor with another one, but sadly the same problem exists. I checked the red and black wire going to the fan itself and it registered 14.25v which is promising. I have to say it was really easy to access the heater resistor on the 5008. You have to remove the tray from under the pedals and then pull off part of the dashboard where the headlight aim dial is (which simply snaps back in). Im starting to think its probably the blower itself that has gone. I will see if I can get one from the breakers and have a crack at replacing it. Its going to involve taking more of the dash apart but it looks dooable.. Its amazing how much you rely on the fans especially when theres been an overnight frost :S

Are you sure you are looking at the correct part? That sounds like you have been looking at the Heating resistance unit which is on the Driver side, not the Blower Control Module that would appear to be on the left next to the Blower motor?.....

This is the heating resistance (1): on the right hand side:
5008 heating resistance.PNG
Blower module control (4) on the left.....
5008 Heater Motor Module.PNG
This looks a completely different setup to any of the C4 Picassos too.

Unplug the thick cables going to the fan, and try running the fan direct from a 12v (battery) supply.
Should run at full speed, and take around 15A, so test best done with a car battery and an appropriate fuse. Fan will run in one direction or the other, depending on polarity of your supply.
Motor could be seized, or stiff bearings (like the video), or the motor brushes could be badly worn.

You could also test the motor control by connecting a 12v 50W (eg headlight) bulb in place of the fan motor. The lamp should go from dim to full brightness using the controls.

It was number 6 that i tried replacing but to no avail. I might be using the wrong words for what I'm describing i do apologise. The thick cable that goes into number 3 is where i was getting a 14.25v reading from. I checked that when the blower motor had died off. I shall try 12v directly into the motor and see what happens. After finding a feather wedged in the number 3 part, i dread to think what else is in there. I have a 2nd hand no3 part coming this week.

FIXED! In the end it was the blower motor that was faulty. To replace it, i had to remove the under part of the dash from where the pedals are, remove two screws on the front of the dash under the steering wheel to give me some leeway to get the motor out and also remove the throttle which was just 3 bolts. The fans sound much smoother and upon removing the old unit, i found a number of leaves in there so i dread to think what made its way into the motor over time!
