I always fancied a P6 but never got round to it. The closest I came was on a car lot in Edgware but I veered off at the last moment and bought an XJ40 3.2 Sport instead! That is a good looking example but I'm not in the market just now!

I must own up (again) to having had three P6s: a 1966 2000, a 1972 2000TC, and finally a 1975 3500S.
The TC had a 10:1 compression ratio, and was designed around 5-star fuel. With slightly retarded ignition it would run on 4-star (5-star 100 Octane having been removed from the market), but only just. Suitable fuel when in France was a nightmare, and so was the time I accidentally filled it to the brim with 2-star, while distracted. Limped the short distance home, with much pinking, and drained most of it out!
The original V8's were also designed for 5-star, but the compression ratio was lowered to accommodate 4-star. Rover never acknowledged the slight reduction in power in their sales literature. By 1975 (when mine was built) the engines were 4-star spec'd. Magnificently smooth and torquey engines, much blunted by many having auto 'boxes. The 3500S had larger SU carbs, and large-bore manifolds and exhausts, and with their 4-speed manual 'boxes (built by Rover in S.Wales) were swift enough to be first choice as police chase cars.
A 5-speed 'box was offered as an SD1 (P6 replacement) option in 1977, and a good few P6 owners fitted these to their cars. I was the second person in the UK to do this. A Police Spec 5-speed 'box was available, new, from Unipart for several years, at a mere £660. It featured not just the close-tolerance build and the oil pump of the standard V8 box for its taper-bearings, but an extra-high reverse gear - for reverse at speed on motorway hard-shoulders!
For the Vanden Plas and Vitesse 3500 SD1's, 5th gear was later raised to around 29.7mph/1000rpm, making the car the highest-geared production car anywhere, with 90mph possible at a tad over 3000rpm, and 30mph possible in 4th at just 1000 revs. 70mph cruising was positively leisurely: 2350rpm!

You are probably the only one on the forum Chris who would have got the car from just that notice about fuel timing and spark plugs without looking it up
The notices look anything but originals though, far too pristine for 46 years spent under a bonnet.

At P6 ROC, we had most of the cars' labels re-produced. With permission from Rover, we also reprinted the phone-directory-thick parts book. In contrast to PSA, Rover were always superbly supportive of enthusiasts for older models, and made financial and other contributions to Club activities, even lending us historical prototypes (some of which we drove), as well as a pair of press-release 827's. My brother had a very nice Rover 827 back in the day. It suffered auto gearbox failure due to coolant getting into the gearbox, probably via the heat exchanger. Now where have I heard about that problem before........?
