C5 X7 Steering rack gaiter.

Unread post by adrianruk »

Hi, help needed again!
I have a split steering rack gaiter on my 2010 C5 X7. The part no. required is 406688 I am led to believe. I ordered & just received same. Going to fit it I find that the diameter of the outer shaft is about 26mm & the 406688 is 13.5mm. Can anyone advise the correct part number please?
TIA

406688 is the correct steering gaiter from your VIN:

So the obvious question is where did you get the part from??? .... and please don't say Euro Car Parts

Hi Mark Marc
Thanks for the usual speedy reply. The part I got is actually a Borg & Beck equivalent BSG3282. The part is the same dimensions as 406688 but the rack fitted is not correct apparently. The gaiter fitted is about the same size as was fitted to the Mk2 C5. I don't know if somehow an old type rack has been fitted. I assumed they were not compatible. The gaiter fitted is actually in OK condition, it has just come adrift on the inner connection. I shall refit it as a temporary measure.
I can take photos if it would help to indentify it. Just don't know how to post them as yet.
I'll go & refit the gaiter now (Ihope!)

That's a distinct possibility - given all the C5 X7 steering racks that have been replaced (I'm on my third). But it is essential to get the correct one. None of the MK II racks have the same part numbers as the X7 - and we know they are different anyway. But there are lots of racks for the X7 depending on engine and build date. - but regardless of rack, the gaiter is the same part for all of the X7s. The gaiter was a different part number on the earlier C5 MK II (406674).

Hi again Marc
Apologies for the incorrect spelling last time!
I have refitted the existing gaiter on a temporary basis. The gaiter appears to be similar to 406674 with the breather but the dimensions are 52 x 180 x 26. 406674 is about 58 x 176 x 21. 406688 is about 50 x 177 x 13.5. So I'm totally confused. I would like to replace it but I don't know what with! Obviously with gaiters there's room for a little bit of leeway but I can't find anything that looks as if it will fit.
I've taken photos but I don't know how to post them.

I'm not sure a photo will help me - but may be of benefit to others:

Just use the FULL EDITOR & PREVIEW button positioned before the SUBMIT button, then at the bottom, look for the ATTACHMENTS tab - then press ADD FILES, browse to the pics from your mobile or PC, and they will be added - but... you then need to place the cursor where you want the picture displayed in your post, then press the PLACE INLINE button to add it. You can use the preview button to check it is in the correct place.

Sorry for the late reply but my pc has died and I’m having to make do with my phone which I’m not very good at! I have refitted the original gaiter which should last for a while. I would prefer to fit the correct gaiter if possible but trying to identify the rack is proving difficult. The gaiter & presumably the rack is made by Koyo but that’s all I know at present. I’ve got a bit of research to do. Not to mention the inner drive shaft gaiter I’ve now found split! Getting my pc repaired is my priority atm though.
