DS5 Heater Blower stopped ?

Post by DSlover »

Hi everyone, having a French Father i was bought up with said vehicles and have been lucky to own and work on some of their best over the years. I recently purchased a Superb 2014 DS5 2.0 HDi, and its a wonderful vehicle that still draws admiring glances, i got in it over the weekend and turned the blower control only to receive nothing ? everything lights up, all the Air Con buttons, demist, recirculation etc: but no blower ? it worked one day but not the next? I checked Handbook for fuse allocation first, but none listed, checked every fuse/ small relay under bonnet, all good, now about to go into glovebox, does anyone know if these suffer from resistor fault like DS3 / C5, or is there a "go to" fuse or relay i should check first? ..... mine is straight heater /blower with no auxiliary warm up heater..... I'm pretty handy with tools but don't want to start pulling apart before i know what is necessary.....much obliged, any help greatly appreciated, great forum by the way, some really in depth advice on here.

Very likely the blower control motor module (resistor). Sometimes it's all or nothing - but a lot of problems this time of year with the rain and damp weather / condensation. Damp can get into the bearings of the blower motor and because these have a slow start and spin up to the required speed, they can get stuck as there isn't enough power to kick start them. Some have had some success in bridging the wiring temporarily to get it going, but this is not a proper solution.

I suspect the blower motor control module will ultimately fail in these conditions. If replacing, don't get a cheap one - go for a branded one like BEHR / Valeo.

Post up your VIN if you want a diagram and part number.

Yes, i thought possibly the same, strange how it worked perfectly then just stopoed literally overnight though ? do you know if there is a fuse or relay in the glovebox i could check first ? also ... does anyone know whete the actual location of the heater box is ? right / left side / underneath / behind glovebox etc? had a quick poke around but can't see it anywhere ? many thanks.

It's buried deep inside the central fascia and accessible usually from the passenger footwell after removing various parts - but I'll need your VIN to locate the exact fuse as these differ from build and Climate system.

Ok, so on your vehicle the blower motor control module is attached directly to the Blower Motor itself.

DS5 Heater Fuses.PNG
Blower Motor Control Unit - item 6The Fuse is F10 (40Amp) and is located in the electrical supplies and management unit that looks like this:
The Supplies Unit (1032) I have highlighted in yellow (sort of) to help you locate it in the engine bay - it will be near the battery:

You are quite the informatiin technician, and i am most grateful Marc, incidentally, for yourself and others, i identified the location of the blower motor and resistor as per your diagram, it is under the drivers side (RHD cars) lower dash, just above the pedals, a hex screw to remove plastic foot rest and unclip the four tabs to lower the small shelf, unplug the footwell light, remove, and hey presto ! there is the blower motor with integral resistor .... five minutes and you're looking at it, you need to be upside down in the footwell and a bit flexible, but pretty easy to then unscrew the two fixings holding the resistor to the blower ..... I will check that blower fuse location you've kindly supplied and get back to you, many thanks again.

No problem, there's not a lot of room in these - quite compact.

Okay, so found the 40amp green fuses under the bonnet, and removed the plastic cover sitting on top of the battery, (not the fuse box cover) the one to the left of that on top of actual battery itself, three or four push tabs and it comes off revealing the heavy duty fuses all the way from 40amp to 125 amp .... two 6mil nuts holding each inline fuse in place, there were "three" green 40amp fuses, removed all three, cleaned up connections with emery paper and re-fitted, all were good and not blown, so I'm guessing next job is to remove resistor from blower and then actual blower itself, might as well check it spins freely if i can get to it, check bearings for moisture/ see if shaft sticking ? .... any more suggestions greatly appreciated as usual Marc .... Thank you.

The resistor module is the blower control module yes ? same thing we've been talking about ? ie: Valeo etc ?

There are 2 types of resistance - not to be confused with each other. The Blower Motor Control unit (item 6) in the diagram is the resistance unit that controls the blower motor and the speed.

The other type of resistance is the air heating resistance that provides initial heating for the cabin when needed to help the cabin reach warmer temperatures more rapidly.

Your car doesn't have this additional heating though.

Okay Marc that's great, no it doesn't have that, so after I've got the motor and resistor out, I'll check the motor itself to see if shaft / bearing sticking, and if free movement and electrical power, i suppose the only other route is the blower control unit ?

If you’re getting power to the blower control unit and the blower motor itself works when connected directly, then it is likely to be the blower control unit I would think.

Morning Marc, So before i go ahead and pull out the motor and resistor this morning, are there any "Relays" for the blower i should check first ? ive checked the 40amp fuses as you know, but not yet checked for a faulty blower relay? in fact I've not been into the glovebox board, so just checking i haven't missed a relay of any kind ..... Thank you.
