C4 Pic 2014 Exclusive (B87) - Fuel Pressure Issue ?? I think ??

Post by zane2g2 »

Good morning you lovely people :-)

Driving the car this morning and I had a couple of warning throw up on the display...
"Engine Fault: Have the vehicle repaired"
and
""ESP/ASR system fault"

The esp I believe is the braking system. But the odd thing is that brakes are fine.

The big one is the Engine Fault. The engine is the 1.6 hdi Diesel.
The car drives ok until it is under load.
Driving at approx 30-40mph then put your foot down it starts to have a mild stutter.
Lift your foot off and it the engine revs ok.
Put your foot down again and the mild stutter returns.
It's almost feels like a miss fire.

I have an OBD2 reader and after updating it, it shows a code of P0087 which I believe is a low pressure fuel problem.

Would any of you lovely people have any ideas what could be causing this issue.
I'm thinking of having the Fuel Filter replaced and emptying & replacing any fuel in the tank, just to be on the safe side.

Ok, so here is the diagnosis for that code - quite involved! However, before doing anything I would suggest you look at my last point about the recall for your vehicle below.
Fault codeP0087
After sales description of the fault codeFuel circuit: The pressure measured in the injection rail is less than the setting
Description of the diagnosticsThe measured pressure is below the reference value by more than 9% (For 1,2 seconds)
Conditions of activation of the diagnosticsEngine running
Conditions of disappearance of the faultDriving for 5 minutes with several full load accelerations for 10 seconds
Down-grade modes if fault presentClosing of the EGR (exhaust gas recycling) valve
Irreversible deactivation of the vehicle speed limiter
Irreversible deactivation of the vehicle cruise control
Deactivation of taking account of the tight spot information
Switching of the turbocharging pressure regulation to controlled mode
Switching to fuel "normal reduced flow" mode;Sending of the information "torque uncertain" on the CAN network
Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning messageWarning lamp MIL
Warning lamp STOP
Main customer complaints likelyJerking/stalling
Lack of power
Starting problem
Slightly higher fuel consumption
Fluid leak/smells (diesel fuel, oil, etc.)
Cutting of the vehicle speed limiter
Cutting of cruise control
Difficult to engage gears
Noise
Engine acceleration at wrong time
Smoke from the exhaust
Absence of automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine (If the vehicle has the Stop and Start system)
Suspect areasPoor quality of the fuel or type of fuel
Air leak on the fuel filter
Clogging of the fuel filter
Leak in fuel circuit (low pressure)
Blockage on the low pressure fuel return circuit
Fuel high pressure flow regulator
high pressure fuel pump
Pressure sensor on the fuel high-pressure injection rail
Leak on the high pressure fuel pipes
Leak on the fuel high pressure common injection rail
Fuel injectors
Electrical harnesses
Connectors
However, whilst checking your vehicle, I need to inform you that there is a recall outstanding on this vehicle:

"An after-sales campaign must be carried out on this vehicle. Advise your client to make an appointment with their authorised dealer as soon as possible"

So I would ring your dealer, have the reg or VIN handy and tell them you have been advised there is a recall coming up as outstanding. I can't tell you what for - they keep that information internally.

Hi Marc,

Many thanks for your help.
I have the car booked in tomorrow for an MOT so I'll get them to check it out.
I might try the cheap fix of new Fuel Filter and drain & clean the fuel lines and get the injectors cleaned.

I phoned the Local Citroen dealer and the recall is for the Drive Belts and Tensioner.

I'll keep you posted.

Hi Marc,

Would you happen to have a diagram/illustration for replacing the fuel filter on this particular vehicle at all please.

I think the issue is down to rubbish/dirty fuel.
The fault code has gone and not returned and the car appears to running ok.
But I'm still going to replace the fuel filter, empty the fuel and clean everything out.

Cheers
Zane

Zane A.PNG
Place the tray underneath the fuel bleed pipe outlet (When coupling the tool, protect yourself using a cloth to prevent any splashes of fuel).
Disconnect and move aside the connector ( as "b") (Water in diesel fuel detector) (according to equipment).

N.B.: The water in diesel detector acts as a lock for the water bleed screw (2) on the fuel filter.

Unlock: The water bleed screw (2) (Clockwise);
Raise the water bleed screw (2) fully (In the direction of the arrow ( as "c")).
Allow the liquid to flow out.

CAUTION: Place the cover (5a) of the fuel filter (5) upside down, in a spot that is secure and clean.
Remove:
  • The bolts (6)
  • The filter element (5b) from the cover (5a) of the fuel filter (5) (Fuel filter heater)
Refitting

ESSENTIAL: Respect the safety and cleanliness recommendations that are specific to high pressure diesel injection (HDi) engines.
CAUTION: Adhere to the tightening torques *.
CAUTION: At refitting, all the removed seals must be replaced with new seals.
CAUTION: Open the bag containing the fuel filter (5) just prior to refitting.

* Torque Settings - Fuel filter:

N.B.: Check the condition of the seal ( as "e"); If there is any anomaly, replace the fuel filter (5) cover (5a) in its entirety.
Unlock: The water bleed screw (2) (High position).
Refit the seal ( as "g") (New).
CAUTION: Be careful when positioning of the cover (5a) of the fuel filter (5) (Locating lugs ( as "f")).
Position the cover (5a) of the fuel filter (5) on the filter element (5b) (Locating lugs ( as "f")).
Refit the screws (6) without tightening.
Push the water bleed screw (2) fully ; Lock : The water bleed screw (2) (Anti-clockwise).
Retighten the bolts (6) to the correct torque.

Check that the centring ring is present( as "d").
CAUTION: Very carefully, vertically position the fuel filter (5) in the slot "h" in the support (7) of the fuel filter (5) (Risk of damage).

Fit the fuel filter assembly (5) onto the support (7) ( as "h") (Carefully).
Refit the bolts (4).
Remove the tools [0194-T], [1520-B / 5705-T].
Couple the click-fit unions (1), (3a), (3b).
Connect:
  • The connectors ( as "a") (Fuel filter heater)
  • The connectors ( as "b") (Water in diesel fuel detector) (According to equipment
Refit:
  • The engine cover
  • The protective panel under the engine
Priming and bleeding the fuel circuit
Zane F.PNG
Operate the manual priming pump (8) several times to prime the fuel circuit.
Checking for Leaks:

CAUTION: Perform the operations that are required following a reconnection of the ancillaries battery.

Reconnect the ancillaries battery. (Refer to previous procedure for reconnection)
  • Start the engine.
  • Allow the engine to idle for 2 minutes.
  • Check the absence of leaks.
Bleed during service (Presence of water)
  • Put the vehicle on a hoist.
  • Remove the under engine protection.
  • Place the tray underneath the fuel bleed pipe outlet (When coupling the tool , protect yourself using a cloth to prevent any splashes of fuel).

Just changed the fuel filter on my 3008 with the same engine for the same fault... hopefully it has cured it! I was unable to get the 3 small TORX screws out and had to replace the entire filter and lid - manged to get an OE one from e-bay for just over £40. I didn't bother draining it first, just removed it full of fuel then emptied it once out. Depending on access you may need to dismantle half the car to get access to it!!
