Thanks James, just watching it and the "Audi guy" talking about the e-tron "family SUV" was pressed by the presenter.
"There aren't many families who could afford 90,000 euros for a car"

to which he gave a shrug worthy of the best the French could produce and said...

"Sure there are!"
and perhaps that is why the electric revolution isn't going as fast as it could. Big manufacturers make the biggest profit from selling the biggest/more expensive cars.

The high volume/ low margin electric car hasn't arrived because at this stage the big players are in their comfort zone, and Aldi and Lidl don't exist yet metaphorically speaking to shake them up!

Cheers Neil,

Looks promising with the exception of blind spots from the double A pillars and massive C pillars - might no be a problem in the autonomous future .....

Climbing into the central seat (global market capability) does look to be a challenge but maybe we could have a Johnny Cab option

Very nice find there James. Website still a bit scanty on detail, and as yet a very embrionic enterprise.

Dr. Qu Li, the CEO and founder of Morris Commercial, says: “I am so pleased to reach this stage after over two years of intense development. It’s been a fantastic journey and I am extremely proud of what the whole Morris Commercial team and its incredible suppliers have achieved. The working engineering prototype has undergone extensive road testing and the end of 2019 is an amazing conclusion to the first phase of the project. We still have a little way to go to bring the project to full production, but we have the team and the product to make this an enormous success. As a business we are committed to environmental sustainability and we are trailblazing a new approach to the production of appealing, fully electric commercial vehicles. We are very excited to unveil the JE to the public this autumn".

Interesting concept, although I do take issue with a couple of aspects of it.

1) Mid seating position at the front for the driver ? It doesn't look that much narrower than my Ion (which is already one of the narrowest cars I've ever seen or been in) yet you lose one seat at the front, and then also have poor driving visibility especially for overtaking or pulling out from parallel parking. I don't think the loss of one of the front seats and a worse driving position is worth the benefit of the car being slightly narrower. The Ion has already nailed the sweet spot for "very narrow but still usable" city car IMO. It squeezes through gaps nothing else will but still seats four, even though you're nearly shoulder to shoulder...

2) I simply don't believe the claimed range. 93 miles from 12kWh is 7.75 miles/kWh - no other EV comes anywhere close to this, even at city driving speeds let alone at higher speed. In city driving with my Ion I typically get around 4-5 miles/kWh which is already considered very good. The best I have ever managed driving at a constant speed of about 40-50mph is 5.8 miles/kWh. In summer. With the heater off.

Granted they claim the car will weigh 600Kg (unladen ? Add another 200Kg for 3 passengers) which is half the weight of my 1100Kg Ion however regenerative braking means that the weight penalty of having a heavier car is greatly diminished, since it takes more energy to accelerate a heavier car (or climb a hill) but you get more regenerative energy back when you slow down or descend a hill. So it works out you only pay the penalty for about 1/3rd of any extra weight you carry.

So making the car half as heavy doesn't magically mean you'll get twice the miles/kWh... Also, the amount of energy needed to heat a cabin is proportional to the volume of the cabin not the weight of the vehicle. So while driving might not consume as much, it will still take a good amount of energy to heat the cabin in winter. Meaning that the heater will have a proportionally larger effect on the range.

So I can't take the claimed 93 miles from 12kWh seriously at all I'm afraid, unless that is purely pootling around at city speeds with one occupant in summer with the heater off...!

Not sure if the KIA Soul EV the lastest version has made an appearance here before.

For a quick dip in there's this Video from "Autotrader". Fully Charged and others will have a more in depth analysis if you are interested and have half an hour to spare :-D

Seems like over in the US KIA have delayed its launch because of greater demand in europe and scarity of battery supply, so they are concentrating on markets where the demand is hot.

Did Kia pinch the drawings for the original Fiat Multipla before they designed that front end? :-D

Not available yet but Nissan undoubtedly will have to add further models to their Leaf offering, and the Nissan Ariya showing at the Tokyo Motor show is set for production.

Bet you are wondering what the Nissan Ariya looks like. Well if I tell you its a compact crossover SUV it could dampen the excitement to click on the article link to find out!
