The only time I've knackered a torx head and couldn't get the disc off, I've drilled the head off the screws. The threaded portion comes out easily. Now when I refit the discs, I tighten the screws then back them off slightly

I once used a large 2-jaw extractor to remove Dispatch front discs. The whole "cup" of the disc was rusted to the hub and so the discs finally came off in three pieces

Using a disc without grub screws is fine until...It's on the front its dark, raining and you get a puncture. Every bloody time you put on the wheel the disc moves a little and you can't get the bolts in. You may well be doing this with the miserable light off a mobile phone whilst an irate wife keeps asking "what's the hold up"?

And this is exactly the time you take advantage of your AA membership and let some poor sap do it for you :-D

We drove to Aberdeen yesterday to see Russell Howard (fan-bloomin-tastic BTW :rofl2: Seriously funny) and my old P38 all of a sudden made a *POP* followed by a pssssssssssssssssssssss....... and the rear right suspension airbag deflated (along with my mood...).

Limped last few miles to the hotel and ordered a taxi.

Saw RH and almost pee'd myself laughing :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

This morning, had breakfast, contacted AA on the app (pretty cack really coz you STILL have to call them.... )

Told them to not send a van as suspension is useless so just send a flatbed... But no!

Anyway, long story short, eventually they sent a truck which took us all the way home and I was so pleased I invited the driver in for a coffee (wife has a very expensive thing that grinds the beans and whatnot) and we chatted.

He was the mechanic of the firm and he would have happily done any repairs needed, but when I told him my diagnosis he bowed to my superior knowledge (well, I've had this car 3.5yrs and I know her inside out) and allowed me to drive her on the back & proceeded to strap her down.

Long story short, we got the car home, I investigated and found a burst exhaust had melted the pipe to the rear right air bag, causing it to deflate. 2hrs later it was fixed when I installed a new section of pipe 8-)

The point??

Yeah, it can be a proper dick when you shudder to a halt at 3am. But you pays your money and you takes your chance. AA got me 100 miles back home where I had the wherewithall to find the problem and fix it without the need for a garage.

It helped that I'd an idea it "may" have been the pipe. But at least we were trolleyed home

It was worth my monthly payment to be delivered home :)
Has anyone seen the plot? :?

Well that must be 1st for the AA - an endorsement!

I do agree with the security "recovery" provides (especially as it is often included in insurance for peanuts) but is a puncture really an "emergency"? I think most of us would just get on with changing the wheel - if only to save time.

That said, I did come unstuck once when I got a 2nd puncture in quick succession & my recovery charged me for taking me to the nearest tyre shop - because I didn't have a spare! I sometimes wonder if they'd have done that if I'd called them out to the 1st one So it was obvious from their own records as to time & location that I would've been unable to have the 1st puncture repaired before I got the 2nd one.

As to the problem aligning bolt on wheels (VW's are worse, in my experience) the trick is a 2" bolt with the head ground off & a slot cut in the end: insert bolt in one hole, fit 3 wheel bolts, remove locating bolt (well, stud I suppose) & replace with 4th wheel bolt - OR you can buy the proper tool, about £6 iirc.

Grunting, groaning and the liberal use of expletives also works but not as elegant.

You also need AA cover to get them out to change your wheel!

If that was aimed at me, we're clearly at X-purposes; if it wasn't - I still don't understand, but perhaps it doesn't matter.

It wasn't aimed at anyone. Someone had mentioned getting the AA out to change a wheel. I have a €500 car paying €100 a year for the AA wouldn't make much sense in my case and I'm seldom more than 10 miles from home.

That tool you mention for aligning the wheel holes is actually a part of the jack tool kit on my C5. :)

Well, well, well - a major manufacturer catching up with the real world (shame VW didn't think of it 60 years ago)

Where's the jack in a C5? I need to know in case I ever see one in a breaker's.

I agree but the suggestion was, as I read it, aimed at AA members, indeed "AA" may be taken as convenient shorthand for "Recovery Service of Choice" which, in the UK at least, seems to be included at little or no cost in any fully comp. insurance policy. Of course I'm seldom within 10 miles of wherever I might be calling home at the time - which IS a factor.

The jack (and extras) is in the loot, under the boot floor.

Well, I promised the results of my labours and here they are:
IMG_20191002_124843.resized.jpg
And, the extractor didn't break off stuck in the hole!

I discovered that the back of the screw hole is open to the elements - so, I stuck a knob of grease in the back of each to plug it up.

Might I suggest (if I haven't already done so) that you use copper slip grease on the new bolts. It won't dry out from the heat of the brakes, as it is good for over 1,000 degrees Celsius.
