Hi Paul

I got my last one from autosteerdirect, link below. I tried looking for a Citroen rack and unsurprisingly, they don't seem to have any in at present (I wonder why)! It may be worth giving them a call to see when they expect stock back in. They have 99.4% positive feedback on ebay and I was very pleased with the quality of the rack. The rate these are failing is criminal to be honest, and would explain the shortages. So probably depends on the refurbishing time - but they do numerous other makes - so definitely worth calling them.

http://www.autosteerdirect.co.uk/racks.html

That leak will get bigger and will start costing you a bomb in LDS not to mention getting everywhere - so absolutely a priority to get it sorted. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Marc,

I'll give them a buzz in the morning. Do you mind me asking how much was a quarter of the cost of the new Citroen part?
(I appreciate it was a couple of years ago)
Cheers,

There are 2 sizes of rack - a 180 and a 184. The 180 is the same as mine, and the cheaper rack is for the 184 steering angle ones.

The 184 angled rack is £1301 inc. VAT currently.
The 180 angled rack is £1719 inc. VAT currently.

UK prices of course.

Mine is the 180 and I paid £349 to Autosteer for my refurbished one back in May 2018.

If you want the correct part number for the rack for your specific model Paul, just pop up the VIN and I'll get it in a second.

So I actually paid a fifth of the price of the genuine OEM Citroen one - which was totally useless despite supposedly being modified.

Hi Marc,
Woa, that’s some price for a part that’s basically ineffective. Citroen should only charge a nominal replacement fee for a ‘known’ defective part, at least until they modify it properly.
Talk about spoiling the ship for a ha’p’orth of tar!
Apologies, rant over.

The vin is: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Thanks again,
Paul

Ok, so the revised part number for your rack is: 9801415480. It was originally 4001W3 until the 'modified' version (such as it was) came out.

I spoke to Autosteerdirect and although they don't have a replacement rack in stock, they quoted me £150 to refurb my own.
It just means the car's off the road for an extra few days, but at least I'll know it's the right part and that there's a 3 yr warranty.
Unlike that of Citroens £1,700+ with no guarantees!

So, I'll probably start the process next week and I'll report back.

Thanks for the contact.

That sounds like a plan Paul - and I'm sure they'll do a good job. In the interim, have a look at my last thread when mine failed - you'll need to source some seals - Citroen only supply the O' rings as part of the pipes and not separately. It is recommended that you fit slightly oversized ones as this is a known weak point.

If you've not done so already, don't forget to add your broken steering rack to the Component Failures poll here ----> viewtopic.php?t=59630&start=45
:)
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Thanks Marc,

I had a look at the link and I'm a little confused. I'd assumed Autosteer would be replacing all the seals when refurbing the rack.
Are the seals you reccomend getting an additional safeguard against future failure?

On the upside, I've driven a few hundred miles since getting the car back topped up with lds and there was no lds loss when I checked yesterday.
But I've a lot of driving to do in Sept., so I'll still get the job done asap.

Bobbins, thanks, will do.

Paul - the seal is fitted on the pinion - but you need new seals for the low and high pressure hydraulic pipes that connect to the rack.

In that thread - here is the post that Stu linked me to and where I bought mine from - as you can buy in small quantities - click on the images in the post to get the order details and sizes: The supplier is simplybearings and there is a link in the post:

https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... 45#p576062

Your mechanics will need to fit these seals - as normally Citroen only supply the seals with the new high and low pressure pipes and not separately - evidently unaware of the design fault at the time and did not anticipate the number of rack failures!

Hi Marc,
Just an update to advise that since I got the car back from the mechanic, I've checked the fluid levels daily to monitor any loss and there has been none!
It's quite unusual, as there should have been some lds loss over the period of a week. So, although I'm conscious that the rack issue will need to be addressed, I'm going to keep driving until there's some signs of fluid loss.
Rgds,
Paul

Ok, that is good - maybe it was just a fluid spill from topping up or something that was there already. Keep an eye on it though...

Hi Marc,

It's hard to believe I've got this far without the rack giving out on me, but then I haven't been driving the C5 too much since we last spoke. I've decided to get a replacement and I've read most of the posts relating to it
which have raised a few queries:
I want to make sure to order the correct part (autosteerdirect) and I think it's 9801415480 (modified part) going by one of your previous posts, however, there's also the issue 180 or 184? Would my vin no identify the correct replacement part?
The other issue is that of the seals, would I need a part number for the correct fit from simplybearings?

In relation to the ongoing corrosion problem, how about sealing the metal with a thin coat of epoxy resin instead of grease? It would create an aquaphobic seal for life. I've used it successfully on metal and timber.

Btw, I'm assuming that you're still happy with the replacement part from Autosteerdirect?

All the best,
Paul

Hi Paul

As you probably know we are now charged for access to parts data, so we do ask members for a small contribution of £10 to cover you for up to 2 years for current parts details and parts diagrams where needed.

If you feel you want to donate please follow the link in the table below.

As most of the info has already been covered in the topics, yes that part number is correct for that engine and yes you have the 180 steering rack angle.

I have had no further issues on my rack so far, so have to say it has lasted longer than the brand new official replacement which gave out after 2 years or less.

As for the seals these are not supplied in parts from Citroen for this model - so I had to get mine separately - details should be in the steering rack threads. I think I used the same company as Stu did. :-D

As for the alternative to grease, I think that might be worth you bringing that up in the thread as it sounds interesting more details would I'm sure be of interest to members.
