Stuck seatbelt

Post by Baldhead »

I’m picking up a secondhand Nemo which I roadtested today, in a few days. The passenger seatbelt is locked solid, I’m thinking it’s probably the pretensioner is damaged, I’ve been told it just locked up and the vehicle has not been in an accident. I am buying the van privately, not through a dealer. Is this a simple repair or will I have to replace the whole seatbelt with a secondhand one from a breakers yard?
Thanks Baldhead.

Bear in mind these are the same utility vehicles as the Peugeot Bipper and the Fiat Fiorino - but mostly Fiat and are all built in Turkey. Very little Citroen about them to be honest, and diagnostics can be a pain, as when using proprietary diagnostics kit a special adapter is needed to read the ECUs as most of them are Fiat based.

Pop up your VIN (or the reg - I can get the VIN from that) when you get a chance and I'll see which type you have.

The reg is *******. I haven’t picked it up yet, possibly tomorrow or Thursday.
Out of interest, how do you get the VIN with just the registration?
Thanks

Ok, so you have (or will be getting) a NEMO UTILITY VEHICLE VAN 1.3 HDI 75 Manual gearbox 5.

The front right belt has part number: 1613972380 and the left one is: 1613972980.
Nemo Seatbelt.PNG
Before removing the belt, you must disconnect the battery negative terminal and do not allow it to make contact. Then wait 10 minutes to allow the Airbag Control System capacitors to discharge. Usual warnings apply - don't use any powered measuring instruments on the pre-tensioner and don't carry the belt by the wire.

You will have one of two seat belt assemblies - it depends on your vehicle, so I've included both assemblies:
Nemo Seatbelt B.PNG
Nemo Seatbelt C.PNG
1st Assembly
Unclip the cover (1) ( as "a") ; Using tool [1].
Release the seatbelt (2) from the cover (1).
Remove the cover (1).
Remove:
  • The (3) bolt
  • The seat belt (2) (lower part)

Nemo Seatbelt E.PNG
2nd Assembly
Unclip the cover (4) ( as "b"), using trim removal tools [1].
Release the seatbelt (2) from the cover (4).
Remove the cover (4).
Remove:
  • The (3) bolt
  • The seat belt (2) (lower part)
You may well have to remove the 'Cab Partition' to get at the Post trims and some of the window seal trim may also be necessary.

Next you'll need to remove the B Post trims, after removing the floor sill trim:
Nemo Seatbelt F.PNG
Remove the bonnet release control.
Remove bolts (1).
Unclip and remove: The door sill trim (2).
Nemo Seatbelt G.PNG
Nemo Seatbelt H.PNG
Remove the bolts (5), (6).Disengage the front seat belt reel (2).
Unlock the connector ( as "c").
Disconnect the connector "d".
Remove the seat belt (2).
Refitting
Connect the connector "d".
Refit:
  • The seat belt inertia reel (2)
  • The bolts (5), (6), tighten to 4 daN.m
  • The seat belt (2) (lower part)
  • The (3) bolt, tighten to 4 daN.m
1st assembly
Enter the seatbelt (2) into the cover (1).
Clip: The cover (1).

2nd assembly
Enter the seatbelt (2) into the cover (4).
Clip: The cover (4).

If the belt is locked solid - won't unreel, despite repeated tugging - it could be that the belt rewound itself with a twist in it.
With the vehicle on level ground, try numerous gentle tugs at the belt, including some rapid ones with a bit if slack in hand (a sort of hammer action).
If that fails, remove the pillar trim, and take a look at what is going on at the reel.

Really appreciate your help, but............I didn’t buy the van, HPI check showed it as a Cat C right off, owner denied it was, but cracked windscreen, the seat belt was locked solid, no slack at all, I decided to pull out of the purchase. The owner a 21 year old lad says he’ll only return my deposit if I go and collect it, that’s over 100 miles round trip for a tenner!, gave him my bank details but he’s still refused. I’m £20 down, but I saved buying a repaired right off for £4000.
But there’s good news, bought a Nemo yesterday, and I’m happy with the purchase, so I’ve no doubt they’re will be more questions for me.
Thanks again guys.

Good decision to pull out of that Cat C.
Hope the other one goes well.

Indeed - I think you got away lightly there for a few quid. Let me know the VIN of the new Captain and I'll replace the old one no longer required.
