I have a 'service' light on, is that for an oil change or something else?

Do you mean it's actually showing the word 'Service' in the top half of the speedo display ? If so -

Mine is on all the time - some airbag fault that doesn't light up the airbag light in the binnacle.
It would also light up when the washer fluid was low, so it could be any of many things.
Mine's not an X7 though.

It could be just about anything, unfortunately. If it was the particle filter (FAP) or diesel additive low then there would be a message up in the display as well. You might get away with using a cheap OBD reader to obtain the fault codes, but realistically you'd need to either get it on a Lexia / Diagbox or similar PSA capable reader - of which there are a few available..... I think Gibbo's got one :)

If you were due an oil change or the 'service due' indicator hadn't been reset last time it had an oil change then there would be a message on the screen when you turn on the ignition.

I have two Lexias, Lexei? and a laptop with XP, they will get as far as displaying the car model but won't connect to it, mind you I haven't tried it on the C5 but it stopped working on the 406. Any suggestions?

Simon.

Might be worth a trip, failing all else.

Give it a try on the C5. If it doesn't work then ask Marc (GiveMeABreak) if he fancies a day out in Dorset 8-[

On my C5 X7, LexiaDB v7.57 requires the VIN in order to connect.

Peter if you do not have any luck with your Lexia i am home for most of the day today, not sure where Gibbo is but i am in Poole maybe an hr or so from you if fancy a trip up this way.
I have used the Lexia on a 2008 C5 X7 and 2010 C5 X7 so it should connect to yours.

Gibbo is in the Forest of Dean about 13 miles from the Severn Bridge.

That service light comes on even if it's just low on screenwash water so a check of that and the other fluid levels might fix it.

Thanks for all the offers, Poole sounds inviting Colin - the last time we went there was for the ferry to France. I shan't do anything for a day or two as everything seems well at the moment, although I will check the fluids but I may well take you up on that.

There don't seem to be any manuals available except some downloadable ones on ebay. Can someone give me some advice on that, I don't even know what brake and steering fluids it uses yet.

It's not the sharpest of copies, but you can download a PDF of the 2008 owner's manual for free here:
