Citroen C5 Estate - Any Good?
I can buy a Citroen C5 estate for quite silly money. It's a 1.6 HDi seller says it needs tyres and wishbones. I like the look of it but I have heard stories about them being high maintenance. Any comments welcome, thanks!

What year? Mk2 or Mk 3 (X7)? How many miles? Any MOT on it?

It's 2007 so MK2 I think. No test tbh I just got a call from a friend that's selling it. €350 so about £300 no idea if mileage it was being driven until recently

Re: Citroen C5 Estate - Any Good?
It will be a Mk2 (otherwise known as the facelift), but you will have to see what the service history is. There is (with some 1.6HDi engines) a known design flaw that allows sludge to build up, and for the filter in the turbo banjo bolt to get blocked, resulting (over time) in a failed turbocharger.

Re: Citroen C5 Estate - Any Good?
GREAT CARS....so big and so so very comfortable.
Why worry at 300euro.....just throw 2 Oil changes in over 200 miles, tighten the injector bolts and drive it.
The only other common problem are the rear arm bearings, that is a "CLACK" from the BACK over speed bumps (maybe why he says wishbones), do not confuse with a drop link which is a noise from the front....cheap
It is hard to judge a 300Euro car from "common faults", just make sure it does not smoke, has no lights on and does not CLACK at the back over bumps.

The space in the back is enormous. I swear that, on occasion, I have heard an echo when loading the boot!

Re: Citroen C5 Estate - Any Good?
My old Mk1 creaked at the back through two or three UK MOTs and still passed. I bought the bearing kits fully intending to change them but never got around to itStickyfinger wrote: 29 Jul 2019, 07:01The only other common problem are the rear arm bearings, that is a "CLACK" from the BACK over speed bumps (maybe why he says wishbones)...

Re: Citroen C5 Estate - Any Good?
There's a long history of Citroen rear-end creak and clack: C15, BX . . .
Good to know that these traditions are being maintained.

Re: Citroen C5 Estate - Any Good?
Any bets that the DPF and/or Eolys level need looking at for this?
What are the regs for the Irish equivalent of the MOT for warning lights?

Re: Citroen C5 Estate - Any Good?
I had a couple of Mk 1s, certainly big but not up to the standard of previous hydropnumatics which I drove for 30 years. The hydractive one is better for ride but my 2.0 Hdi gave a dreadful ride even after I changed the spheres and trailing arm bearings.

I'll second that. I'm on my 3rd MK1 with a previous 2.2HDI Estate and a 2.0 HPi (we all make mistakes!) and all three have been/are as smooth as silk. Every bit as nice to drive as my 2 XM's were but not quite as nice as the Xantia Activa
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!
