C5 Mk1 2.2 HDi Compressor Installation

Post by mickthemaverick »

I have just taken out my aircon compressor which is an SD7V16 from the car and unfortunately two of the spacers from the mountings dropped out before I had seen them in place. Thus I'm looking for an exploded diagram of the actual compressor to engine mountings so I can work out what goes where when I refit it after I have replaced the clutch coil (and clutch as I am doing it) which has gone open circuit. Also any info on the clutch clearance when refitting would be helpful. Cheers :)

In case this is useful to anyone else I thought I'd post these pics of the compressor clutch "exploded":

This is the unit in my car
Image

With the clutch dismantled the parts look like this from the outside:

Image

and like this from the inside:

Image

So in both pics from left to right you have:
Spindle nut
Outer clutch plate
Pulley retaining circlip
Pulley/inner clutch plate
Coil retaining circlip
Coil
Compressor body.
Note there is a spacing shim on the compressor spindle to set the clutch clearance which I have left inside the body. I have got a new clutch and coil on order for £78 which is much cheaper than a whole new compressor. Before ordering I checked the operation of the pump which is smooth and very "pumpy" and collected the oil from it to ensure we refill with the correct amount when I get round to refitting it. The other thing to be sure of is to immediately seal the pumps ports and the system hoses when you disconnect them to prevent moisture getting into the system. I use the fingers of neo gloves and rubber bands on the pipes and large body studs cover the pump ports and held in place with gorilla tape.

I just need to rebuild it when the parts arrive and find out where those spacers go and bingo!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

As per your VIN, you have a Sanden SD7V16 compressor Mick (either a 1227 or 1240). I have the following info for the parts if that helps:

Click diagrams to zoom then

Thanks for the effort Marc, at least that confirms that all the clutch parts I have are correct and will prove very useful if I do have to rebuild the compressor which is working properly at the moment.
However what I am missing is a diagram of the compressor's mounting bolts and various spacers which secure it to the block. If you could turn up a picture of those I would be most impressed and exceptionally grateful!!! :-D

Marc, Thanks to the picture below I now have the new aircon clutch fitted and the compressor back in the car. All seems good mechanically but I did have to drain the compressor oil and so I would appreciate knowing the correct oil and gas quantities for the refill. My compressor is an SD7 V16 and I believe I should use 135cc of SP10 oil and 675 +/- 25g of R134A gas. Could you confirm please? Cheers

Ok, so the compressor oil capacity for C5 MK I 2.2 (DW12TED4):

Compressor Oil Capacity: 135 Cc, Oil type SP10
Refrigerant R134a: 675 ± 25 g.

So yes, correct values Mick. Note: not normally required to check the oil compressor level during a gas recharge, except when there has been a leak.

Thanks Marc, I drained the compressor completely so I will refill with the "as new" quantity. Hopefully I'll have aircon in time for the rain at the weekend!! 8-)

It's a eureka evening, had the aircon gassed today and now with new condenser and new clutch, oil and gas the system is up and running for the total outlay of £185.00. Much better than the £800ish estimate from the main stealer

Indeed you should, really not difficult neither the condensor nor the compressor are difficult to remove and the difference with the aircon working is great. I did it all with car on normal ramps and high suspension setting. You can remove the inner wheel arch lining with the wheel still on and get to the belt tensioner easily to remove the belt. Then remove the jockey wheel for easy access to the compressor. For the condenser I just removed the top radiator mounts and with the airbox removed you can lean the rad back enough to lift the condensor after removing the pipes. Drop in the new one and Robert is your parent's brother!! Let us know when you join the 8-) clan! :-D :-D

Thanks again for your help on this one Marc. :) =D>
