A quote from Groupe PSA:
The challenges of the energy transition will continue to be a key focus of the Core Technology Strategy, with strategic management of CO2, faster paced electrification of vehicles ranges, with 50% of the offering electrified by 2021 and a target of 100% by 2025, and the use of the first hydrogen vehicles in real-life conditions in B2B customer fleets. Having been one of the first manufacturers to test autonomous vehicles out on the open road, Groupe PSA will continue to roll out advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) taking into account customers’ cost-use value trade-offs.

And a very interesting article - is this another reason why PSA acquired Opel for their Hydrogen R&D and application ....

If I interpret that right, I guess it means that by 2025 for every "model" they make, they will offer an electric drivetrain as an option.

The Research and Development lot at Rüsselsheim will still be occupying some time on ICE development, which they will of course need to put in vehicles and sell to recoup development costs, so a vast change in the new car mix by 2025 may not all that it could be. Hope they plan to gear up their battery supply ambitions or in 2025 when a customer walks into their "Experience Store" and puts on the virtual reality headset, they may be told unfortunately there is a waiting list of 12 months for the electric option, but you can have one of these petrol things straight away if you dont want to wait!
.... the Rüsselsheim Engineering Center will take on the global responsibility for the development of the next generation of high-efficiency four-cylinder petrol engines for all Groupe PSA brands.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles still alive?

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

My latest Newsletter from Riversimple, Llandrindod Wells' very own hydrogen fuel cell car developer, has landed on the mat.

Always worth a read. Of course they always argue their case for Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and point out some of the problems associated with a mass move to battery electric vehicles.
Major development is quietly going into hydrogen fuel cell technology. In March, Michelin announced a partnership with Faurecia to make hydrogen fuel cell systems; in April, Swedish fuel cell maker Powercell signed a partnership with Bosch to mass produce fuel cells at volume.
..and an article to warm the hearts of the battery electric vehicle sceptics....the collective view of a number of scientists in relation to the requirements for cobalt, lithium and key rare earth elements associated with current battery technologies.

Leading scientists set out resource challenge of meeting net zero emissions in the UK by 2050

Well I read this article, and despite positioning themselves with a very well received battery EV offering the Hyundai Kona, and having the world's biggest automobile factory, as indicated before, Hyundai are not ditching Fuel cell vehicles.

Indeed, the article tells us this about Hyundai's lastest Fuel Cell vehicle.
"The Hyundai Nexo went on sale in the UK in March this year. Hyundai says if you order one today, it can be built at the Ulsan factory straight away but with manufacturing in and transportation from Korea, delivery would take three to four months"

Yes it isn't a car for the masses, and your local ironmonger will have to get in a few hydrogen cylinders to keep you going, between long trips to proper hydrogen filling stations.

Have you seen one of these?

SEven of these Suzuki Bergman Hydrogen Fuel Cell Scooters were on trial with the Metropolitan Police. Closely involved in developing the fuel cell in partnership with Suzuki were Loughborough based Intelligent Energy.

Intelligent Energy have also been working with Korean Liquid Hydrogen Specialist MetaVista.

Whether at a stretch we can class drones as "vehicles" for the thread, they could well end up being an important "commercial vehicle" should "deliveries by drone" take off. Liquid Hydrogen Fuel cells are an ideal power choice for commercial and military UAVs as they can offer significantly longer flight times when compared to traditional batteries.

Yes the expansion of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle powered by liquid hydrogen fuel cells may well be on the way.

Talking of the taxman; presumably even now he is working out how to apply tax & duty to electricity - or rather how to collect it.

Bound to happen Van, smart meters for all!

Occasionally I like a dip into the South China Morning Post and this article headline captured my attention. I do like a decent name....
https://www.scmp.com/news/china/article ... gen-future

Wan Gang, China’s father of electric cars, thinks hydrogen is the future
  • The man who convinced Beijing to bet on electric vehicles says it’s time for the car industry’s next game-changing moment
  • Hydrogen fuel cells have struggled to gain traction due to high costs and other factors, but China can change that by making them a national priority

There actually seems to be remarkably little damage considering one of the tanks exploded.

Good that so far no report that anyone seriously hurt which was pretty fortunate. Don’t know a lot about the engineering associated with hydrogen fuelling stations, but the standard pressure for the refuelling process is 700 bar for a Toyota Mirai. Won’t take much of a leak to create an explosive situation.

If you find out more post it up here.

Compare the damage at the Hydrogen filling station to that at a petrol station down in Fontwell, West Sussex, last month. A camper van went up in smoke and took a bit of the scenery with it

On the BBC Breakfast News at this moment they are (in Long Marston) trialling a Hydrogen Fuel Cell train. It is called the HydroFlex. It was converted from a diesel train;

Partnership between Porterbrook (yes they own almost a third of the UK passenger rail fleet) and Birmingham University's center for railway research. Could be big business, hopefully with at least a UK manufacturing base, although the multinationals with economies of scale could be ahead of the game already, and we may end up being an importer rather than have a home-based outward looking industry exporting throughout the world.

One of the firms securing contracts for fuel cell locomotives is Alstom a French Multinational.
Railway Gazette reports (21st May 2019) World’s largest fleet of fuel cell trains ordered

GERMANY: Following a European tender, the Fahma rolling stock subsidiary of Rhein-Main transport authority RMV has awarded Alstom a contract to supply and support a fleet of 27 fuel cell multiple-units.
