Disappearing posts

Post by xantia_v6 »

From time to time we have reports that posts are submitted to this forum but they disappear after being submitted (as in they never become visible). It is sometimes reported that (frustratingly) the user had spent a long time composing the post.

I have recently seen a suggestion on another forum that a plausible explanation for this is that in the case where two or more users are simultaneously typing responses to a topic, the first one to click the submit button will have their post submitted normally, but the other user(s) will, on clicking the submit button, be taken to an extra review page so that they can check that their post is still relevant before clicking submit again.

If a user does not notice that they have been taken to the review page and they navigate away to a different part of the forum without clicking submit again, then their post will be lost.

I would ask that users take note of this behaviour, and particularly after writing a long post, please check that your post has actually been accepted after clicking the submit button.

I think that's exactly what happened to my missing post the other day, while I was typing Marc was too and he clicked on submit before me.
I'll watch out for that in the future.

Has happened here, more than once. In those circumstances (of another response getting in first), could the Submit button be made to flash to attract attention?

I believe that the site software could be changed to make the situation more obvious to users, but it would not be a trivial change (because it would need to cope with the behaviour of different browsers). I will put it on the list of things to investigate.

It is usually fairly obvious when another user posts in a thread before you do, there's a headsup comes up.
Not saying that that doesn't happen though.

Errrr, how do you do that? i.e. without having to save your post elsewhere (or, at very least, copying it) & frantically backpedaling.

But what about the posts that disappear after they've appeared?

Is it possible that you have hit 'preview' then neglected to hit 'submit'?
I'm sure I have more than once.
