2001 2.0hdi engine light and revcounter

Post by Martinez »

Hi, I’m renovating a Berlingo based Nu Venture Surf Motorhome/camper. I’ve had to weld the chassis rails at the rear due to fractures, and I’ve made up n replaced the rear crossmember. The van came with all kinds of extras which I’m slowly removing and replacing. Cruise control, Immobilizer/alarm and Santa’s. All seem to have been professionally fitted, but so many bloody wires to trace and fix means I’ll leave it for now.
Problem I’m trying to solve is the revcounter doesn’t work, it does move slightly if you rev the engine otherwise it’s about as active as Brexit !
The other issue which I think may be connected is the Engine Warning light is on.
I saw a post somewhere that pointed to it being the crank sensor, so whilst at Europarts the other day I got one. Not got round to fitting it yet but what else could it be ?
I bought aobd2 reader and plugged it in, but it doesn’t connect with ECU. Which code reader do I need to read off any faults ?
Any help and advice appreciated. I think it’s a Siemens system (?)

I only need the VIN, that tells me all I need to know.

So you have the 2.0 HDi 90 with the DW10TD engine with a Bosch injection system, not Siemens.

You’ll find limits with generic code readers. Diagbox is the proprietary software with a Lexia VCI for PSA cars. Not for the feint hearted but you’ll also need patience and suitable laptop.

We can help with part numbers, but I would suggest you check here first before ordering as very often aftermarket suppliers are useless when it comes to supplying correct parts and ECP are one of the worst in my experience.

As for the parts, there is an engine speed sensor (3) and a camshaft position sensor (15).

Item 3 is part number: 616170
Item 15 is part number: 1920QN
A9B4D3FA-7659-4D5D-9E9F-982A999FFCE5.jpeg
These are PSA numbers that can be searched on for aftermarket equivalents or quoted to any Peugeot or Citroen dealer for order.

Bosch eh, well I only thought it was Siemens as engine bay didn’t look anything like picture in the Haynes book of lies.
Not sure why you are identifying those 2 parts as they’re not the crank or cam sensor ? What are they and do you think they may be the problem ?
I’ve already bought a crank sensor, just not had time to fit it yet what with all the welding.
Also, can you point me in the right direction for the Diagbox ? And what is PSA ?
I’ve got an old laptop running XP, will this run Diagbox ?
Many thanks for the help so far

Crank sensor is part number 6 by the flywheel and cam sensor is part number 15 next to its "target" plate. Part number 2 is the double relay fyi.

As to the MIL light being on, you need pp2000 or equivalent really, even then you can still be in the "dark".

Some diagnostic readers are not all the are cracked up to be, they only give an "indication" as to what the programmers "think" the problem may be!? PP2000 and similar can show actual "live data".

are any other dash light being "strange and mis behaving" indicating "a make and break contact/fracture" inside the wires, a real nightmare!

What resistance reading does the crank sensor show, and on a bench test, the sensor being "magnetic" , does a dmm show an output when a steel bit is passed close to the magnetic end?

Welding, i do hope you have at least disconnected the ecu and abs, or better still remove them. Also the earth lead should be as close as possible to the "welding area". The alternator should also be removed cos if it aint there the welding cannot "destroy" the fragile electonicery. I assume you are mig welding?

Ah, only disconnected battery. Welding was rear crossmember. Just on way out for day so will have to respond later. No other lights on dash. Radio removed + built in Santa’s ( not Citroen ) and aftermarket cruise control. I’m putting the radio back in but junking the Santa’s thing as it’s got parts missing

Sorry - I forgot the main part you wanted! Indeed, as PicassoDad says, part number 6 - Engine Speed Sensor, part number: 19208S

Haynes? - Useless and they cannot cover all the models and all the variations.
Diagbox - Google it, plenty of information out there, but purchase a 'Full Chip' revision 'C' kit. Installation can be tricky and not all laptops are compatible - there seems to be some issues with some where it will not install - I can't be specific as this is an officially unsupported product.

Be aware that putting in an aftermarket radio will cause problems with the electrical systems unless you know what you are doing. The standard RD4 radios are Head Units and do more than play tunes - they interface with the vehicle's other systems and electrical network - without properly deactivating the factory unit and obtaining the correct harness for an aftermarket unit, you can suffer random electrical issues including the vehicle not locking properly for example.

It won't be the crank sensor or the cam sensor as the engine won't run if either is faulty.....

The Sony radio was already fitted by previous owner some years ago. Looks like I’m going to get buggered about unless I get it checked by specialist. Anybody know of anyone good near wolves ?

Looks like the weather is taking a turn for the worse so doubt I’ll be working on the van much for couple of days. I’m starting to worry that some of the stuff I’ve removed may have upset the ecu. Can’t stick the satnav back in as I had to cut some of the wires to remove it. I did remove the aftermarket alarm/immobiliser and the car wouldn’t start, so stuck it back in and back to how it was. Mot ran out on this last June n I recon it was parked up due to a number of issues, one of which is the light on the dash. If I can get this fixed it should be about ready for mot test.
I’m used to fixing things myself, but the more I read about this particular model, the more it seems I’m buggered without some help. I’m not taking it to Citroen for their accountants to fabricate a huge bill, so my only route now is an independent mechanic.

Many thanks to m300td who came round last night with Lexia and diagnosed problem as MAF.
Rev counter may be a fault on its own and not connected with any sensors. Seems that they can suffer mechanical failure. Apart from the maf, all seems to work really well. Just need to finish the rest off and I’ll see you all out on the road. That’ll be you stuck behind me in the long queue then :wink

on the diagram 15 is the camshaft sensor, 6 is the crank/engine speed sensor & 3 is the road speed sensor.
Agreed that this engine would not run if the crank sensor was faulty, It doesn't need the cam sensor signal to run but does need to see it to allow initial start up.
Lexia should be able to see the reading from the crank sensor no problem.
And yes if any new parts from ECP don't cure any problems don't discount it not being the cause of the problem, its certainly not uncommon to get parts from euro car parts that are faulty straight out the box.
