I read somewhere that Midhurst was one of the last Town Councils to still be running a steam roller - maybe as late as the 1970s ??

You don't mean "Joan" do you?
Spoiler: show
"Marshall Steam Roller "Joan" (1925)
West Sussex County Council steam roller "Joan" built by Marshall in 1925 at rest between Treyford and Didling, near Midhurst, in June 1968. In April 1983 Joan left the WSCC depot in Midhurst for the last time, moving under her own power to the Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre, where she remains to this day."

Thanks for that, Neil. I knew I'd read about 'Joan' somewhere before. 1983 seems mighty late to still be running a steam roller ?!?
If I wasn't so busy at the moment I'd go and take a photo of that exact same spot today :)

I made a slight detour today - just in case......... :-D

A best guess puts it as here - on the corner, obscuring the finger post:
Steam roller location - own work
Steam roller location - own work
And for the completests amongst us - the finger post in all it's double-entendered glory
Treyford sign - own work
Treyford sign - own work
A bit more on 'Joan': It's on long term loan to Amberley Museum from West Sussex County Council. It was purchased new by Midhurst Rural District Council, and operated in the Midhurst area all its working life.
At eight tons working weight, it was a medium sized roller suitable for general purpose work. It was working for the council for over 50 years. It was, indeed, the last steam roller to be operated by a local authority anywhere in the country.

The London boroughs will be seeking to reintroduce them as, asfaik, no news, much less, sign, of a fleet of electric rollers waiting to be snapped up.

Please, no jokes about hairdressers!

The various signs around Fulking always got 'modified' The only thing they could do in the end was try and cram the letters closer together on the signs to make them harder to alter

Could be worse though, I could live just up the road here...

...hadn't realised that Morgan Cars, of the same town ofc, in addition to being the UK's largest British owned mfr, is the world's oldest privately owned Car company". Their products aren't to my taste, but that's a fair old feat.
