Anyone cycled across the Forth Road Bridge? I wonder if ever in the history of the bridge the speed limit for cyclists has ever been enforced?

Indeed, long time since I consulted the Road Traffic Act or highway code but is there any enforcable speed limits on cycles anyway? I think there is some restriction on electric assistance bikes.

..and a fascinating fact I discovered in my meanderings and posted up on the OTCL

What is the speed record for a bicycle? It may have changed now, but it was set on perhaps an unexpected two wheeler which some may describe as a shopping bike by mistake!

Ebikes are restricted to 15.6mph under motor assistance, however you can ride it as fast as you like /can pedal it, if you have one derestricted it classes as an electronic moped, although the derestrictions are not entirely legal!
The land speed record on a bike is 107mph I think, towed to speed and released whilst behind an aerodynamic wall! From memory it has to be done over a mile? Bikes are restricted to the max limit on the roads the same as cars, so in theory they could be pulled up for speeding,

This is the one I was thinking of Timmo

"The highest speed officially recorded for a bicycle ridden in a conventional upright position under fully faired conditions was 82.52 km/h (51.28 mph) over 200 m. That record was set in 1986 by Jim Glover on a Moulton AM7 at the Human Powered Speed Championships during Expo86 World Fair in Vancouver."

I always think the towed behind a vehicle efforts whilst an achievement are not really All that amazing, if they were to power up and then tuck in behind something moving at a hefty speed and then go on, it would be a fair bit more impressive, I guess though the strength you would need to get the bike moving with the gearing would be something!
There are a couple of records set on snow too, 144kmh rings a bell?

Well I think Jim Glover is deserving of his five minutes of fame on this thread. Bit disappointed you can hardly see the Moulton underneath all that streamlined palaver.

On Gibbo's "ambulance" /wanna build a camper? thread the old ambulance site I dug out had this pic of a first responder bike,

So I followed that up with a little query about Police Bicycles... and on wiki was surprised to see this picture

Have a look at the "make" of the bikes.....
Spoiler: show
Yes Birmingham Small Arms also made bicycles but what on earth are the British Police doing with Smith and Wesson bikes!

One of my good riding buddies is an officer, glr excited when they had the fleet of bikes delivered, duely did training course, allowed into the bike shed to discover the Smith and wesson bikes! Weighed significantly more than a small planet! He managed a couple of shifts on them but they really were not so suited for down here! :-D

Not bikes - I was amused to see the police in Brussels cruising around on roller skates :)

This would have been in about 2009.
