I have noticed the fuelling estimates vary accordingly. ie, at overnight-cold start-up the range may be optimistic due to the overall average MPG counter, but as it's initially running rich both MPG and ranges do get quickly downgraded and once the engine's warmed up and some miles into the journey it will begin increasing the figures again.

I do think it's therefore more accurate than you're giving it credit for but of course, it's not infallable and if you don't follow the instructions, may lead to malfunctions. I've caused the display to glitch or even stall after using Diagbox for instance. But a counter reset will clear it.

One thing I won't do is brim it past the second click. The first click is overzealous due to foaming/splashback but my reckoning is if you fill it too much, you risk losing it out the breather.

Out of curiosity was the very detailed explanation by GiveMeABreak right.
Asking for a friend who just topped up 9 litres because of a very long road trip tomorrow and people panic buying scaring him in case he gets stranded. His gauge never registered the fill but neither did his range reading.
I just asked him and he brimmed it too.
Let's call him Frank.

I had the same issue a while ago on a DS3.

I was returning the car at the end of a contract so didn’t want to leave too much fuel in the car. However I either underestimated, or drove too fast ! and got worried I might not get to my destination. So I stopped and put in about £20 of fuel.

Estimated range and fuel gauge remained the same and I thought fuel station’s pumps were faulty so, a few miles later stopped and put another £20 in. Suddenly had a half full tank and a couple of hundred miles of range !

If you're referring to my technical post on the previous page - yes that is correct - but was specifically for the original poster's Xsara Picasso on how the system reads the fuel. It may not be the same for your mate's vehicle.

The gauge can get stuck for several reasons - the sender needle can stick or break, so this can be the cause if the gauge stays more or less at the same position regardless of the fuel level in the tank.

On other occasions it can just throw a glitch and will sort itself out after a few journeys / fill ups/.

Thanks for the replies. This forum is far friendlier than other C4 forums out there. Good people.

This forum was formed (way before I joined) with a very simple attitude; to help anybody with problems with their French cars. Many people have joined, and timidly asked for help on their first post (seemingly expecting to get flamed for asking 'stupid questions'), only to be pleasantly surprised by how much help and advice was offered. There are also threads where people just have fun, talking about things that have nothing to do with cars whatsoever.

Hello all. Topped up with £50 today. Happy days the gauge is back to all lit up and the range reset to 870.
So yes, after letting it go down to below half, the problem rectified itself.
Thanks again for the invaluable feedback.

No problems, mine is exhibiting the same behaviour since last week - and I haven't allowed it to get under half a tank because of the current forecourt delivery issues. So now things are getting back to normal here, at least, I'll be running mine down to about a quarter of a tank and then filling her back up again to the third click. That should sort it.
