Does anyone remember the test card from Croydon, the first ITV transmitter in 1955. It had G9AED across it, I didn't realise the significance of this until I got my ham radio license.

Peter you are probably more than familiar with this stuff, plenty of TV nostalgia here

Thanks, haven't seen that picture since it was live in '55 just before ITV started. We worked late into the night fitting band 111 converters so everyone could be in on the start of ITV.

I guess most of the members of the FCF will have partaken of a French Car or two, but did anyone every risk one of these....

In my thankfully very brief smoking career....the right of passage experimentation as a 10 year old...I was never tempted to try one of these!

The French language teacher in my secondary school smoked them. You could smell him (and them) from a long way off (this was way before the indoor smoking ban).

Cigarettes always had a nicer aroma before you lit them up. Wonder what it was about those French Cigarettes which gave them their particular smell......google may just have to provide the answer!

Then there were those Menthol things......"Consulate....cool as a mountain stream"

Back in the late sixties I used to smoke Gitanes, Gauloises and Camels.

Not so many Camels, they were harder to catch.

Wiki tells us where the original Gitanes get their aroma from....
The classic Gitanes Brunes tobacco achieved its characteristic and distinctive "bite" by using a fire-flued method of curing the tobacco, and a "rice" type of rolling paper which differs from most other cigarettes. The result was a cigarette which had both a strong flavor and a distinctive aroma.

I recall when Virginia tobacco went short at the end of the war they resorted to Turkish tobacco, that really had its own special aroma. Blowed if I can think what they were called, I think Pasha was one name.

Balkan Sobranie is a name that suddenly springs to mind - I think my parents smoked them on highdays, holidays & bonfire nights. I think the cocktail cigarettes (all different colours - with gold tips) for REALLY special occasions, were from the same company.

Then there were those strange oval ones that someone at school found cheap, made Gauloises seem like "mild" (& that distictive shape was why cigarettes that had, e.g. been sat on, were known as "soldiers' Turkish")

My mother smoked Sobranie Black Russian and the oval Turkish ones - but only ever at Christmas, she didn't smoke otherwise.

I recognise that white box (surely the most substantial cigarette "pack" ever) I just wish I could find it - I'm pretty sure the brass discs (& chalk) for the shove ha'penny board were kept in one.
