Never did work out whether the iffy reception, was the transmitter, the distance or the toytown receivers we were using.

It was called 'selective fading' and was caused by the mountains between here and there. The signals would take more than one path and because some paths were longer than other the signals became out of phase, thus cancelling each other or in phase adding to the signal strength. This effect became apparent because in the evening the signals are changing all the time due to varying atmospheric conditions.

I wonder if I'd known that at the time it'd have irritated me - or added to the sense of wonder.

No but they may have made similar things....

The Sunhouse Vistarama was something altogether more spectacular!

The Magicoal I remember had two red bulbs under the 'coal', the heat from which drove two little fans for the flickering effect - mind you that was probably in the '50s.

I couldn't remember the name but my girlfriend's parents had one and we were forbidden to use more than one bar on pain of having it removed altogether.
A rule that was soon ignored when they went to the pub.

They were supplied by the nationalised electricity boards (MEB etc) with own brand labelling, can't think now what that was or who actually made them, could be something like 'Electra'
