Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Thanks for that AA table, Neil.
Yep, remember buying 4 gals (18 L) for £1 around 1967.
As a student in Warrington running first a 1935 Rover Ten and then a 1960 Rover 3-litre - both returning 20-22mpg.
This was easily possible on a student grant*! Try doing that nowadays!!
* Once upon a time, students' actually got these, in order to study. Would you believe that?

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I do remember when I started at that garage, "Regular" was 4/10½d a gallon: more mental gymnastics, although customers who bought it were only likely to buy a couple of gallons at a time. However, I do recall that, apart from the filthy rich "filler up" Johnnies, everyone bought petrol by the gallon - never £'s-worth.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I remember going to the Post Office for a tax disc just after the budget measures had been announced. They'd changed the car tax rate - but my renewal form was for the lesser amount and I was determined to only pay what it - and the posters in the Post Office - said. They had to phone up to a higher authority before they'd sell me my tax disc
Sadly no longer a C5 owner

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I do remember something similar, because (unlike duty on fuel which was effective from when it was announced) it was never entirely clear when an increase in road fund tax (as it probably was then) came in.
I also recall that you used to have produce the old disc at the counter, with all all the other documentation - & so ran the risk of getting a ticket for not displaying a disc while parked outside the PO.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Can you remember those town maps/information boards where you used to press a button and lights appeared in the locations of all such features on the map whether they were toilets/car parks/swimming pools/cinemas or whatever.
Well I think the internet has forgotten them.....cant frame a query to produce any images at all!
Wonder if there are any still in existance?

About 55 years since I last saw one of those.
I suspect that they fell foul of vandalism.

I remember them very well... Great fun as a kid... I seem to remember them most in seaside places that considered themselves a bit of a tourist magnet...

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Well this is as close as I have got.....the Paris Metro...nice little coloured lights appearing when the appropriate route buttons are pressed. Not sure whether its current, or from some time back in the 70's.
Regards Neil
Google aint what it used to be....
"‘Some Métro stations in Paris have maps with colored bulbs along each line of the system. To use the map, passengers push a button with the name of a desired destination, and the bulbs display the recommended itinerary. "

...er it was from a 1970's French Film released in 1977, so no doubt all those little interactive maps with the little light bulbs have all been ripped out by now. The film also featured, maybe surprisingly, a Triumph Spitfire LHD of course, and an early one, a Spitfire 4.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Some Paris Metro trains have a similar system, instead of just an overhead map, as the train leaves each station, that light goes out.
They're starting to install an electronic version of the 3 maps that appear at each station, with a big green illuminated arrow to "turn the page".

Not exactly something which many people recall, unless of course they have been to Gettysburg, but in a semi related tangent I give you....

I've been to Gettysburg, must have been gone before I got there.

Just remembered, some Vietnamese museums/propoganda disemination centres have maps of, e.g. the HoChiMinh trial, with lots of inbedded lights (re-purposing old French technology, perhaps)

With acknowledgement to Steve's (Myglaren) tripometer recording 208.1 today on Significant mileage photos....its close enough to give Radio Luxembourg an airing on Remember these.....
I always find the history of these things fascinating especially when smatterered with a few old images.

Here is what I think is a gem of an image from that story
The ‘Luxembourg Listener’ / Radio Pictorial n°231 / June 17, 1938
"From May 1938 to September 1939 a De Havilland Dragon airplane christened ‘The Luxembourg Listener’ (Olley Air Service) makes a twice weekly return trip from Croydon to Esch-sur-Alzette carrying taped programmes, records and passengers."

A very long time since I listened to Radio Luxenbourg.
Lost it's appeal when Radio Caroline began transmitting.
